Matthew Rickety Cricket Mara (born December 25, 2025) is an American football wide receiver who was recently drafted 2nd overall by the New York Silverbacks in the 2051 ISFL entry draft. He played college football for Liberty University (LU) and was selected 2nd overall in the 2050 DSFL entry draft by the Dallas Birddogs.

Early Years

Matthew Mara was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Martha Mara and Jack Mara. He has one younger brother (2 years), Davey Mara. As well as a beloved family golden retriever named Poppins.

Matthew's family owns and operates a construction supply company named Mara Lumber that has been in business since 1934. It was founded by Matthew's great-great-grandfather and has been in the family ever since. When not in school or playing football, Matthew would spend his time working at the family business doing a variety of tasks such as a cashier, stocking shelves, loading trucks, managing inventory, and customer service.

Matthew attended Saint Joseph's Preparatory School in Philadelphia, PA. He wasn't initially interested in sports but during his freshman year the coach of the football team witnessed an incident in which Matthew was being chased by a couple of bullies and managed to evade them with what the coach would later described as "amazing skill and speed". That display impressed the coach so much that he tracked Matthew down and convinced him to join the struggling high-school football team who had recently lost their best wide receiver to graduation the year prior.

The moment that Matthew was on the field he became an elusive threat on offense. He gave opposing players and coaches fits as he had a puzzling ability to evade tackles and get out of seemingly impossible situations un-touched. The offense even developed plays specifically for him as he would line up as running back or even the quarterback on 4th if they needed a last ditch effort. By the end of his sophomore season, Matthew was amongst the top prospects in the nation and had scouts at every game he played. Even with all the attention, the team proceeded to win the National Championship that season as well as the next two seasons he was there.

By the time his high-school career was completed, Matthew held nearly every record that was tracked by the school who retired his jersey immediately after graduation.

College Career

Being one of the top prospects in the entire nation, Mara had the opportunity for a full scholarship to any school he desired. Ultimately he chose to stay close to his faith and attended Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia from 2043 to 2046 where he pursued a BA degree in theology.

Freshman Season

In 2043, Mara spent the majority of his freshman season on the bench and when he did see the field it was as a specialty teams player. Despite being regarded as one of the top prospects, the coach of Liberty University refused to give Mara any special treatment and instead relied heavily on the players in their senior year that season. This caused outrage by some of the more vocal fans which was then stoked into a controversy by local media who printed articles on the fear of Mara's talent was being wasted.

Sophomore Season

The 2044 season saw Mara joined by freshman quarterback Luke McPoyle who was known for his strong arm. The two became instant friends off the field while spending a great deal of time on it practicing and developing new schemes for the upcoming season. With the graduation of the seniors from the previous season it gave the duo the opportunity to take the reigns of the team and make it their own. This led to Mara becoming a legitimate threat, receiving 68 passes for 1,142 yards and 9 touchdowns and the duo earning the nickname ""The Apostles"" by the fans.

Junior Season

As the duo of McPoyle and Mara continued to show their great chemistry they were granted greater lee-way with their play-calling and formations. This in turn led to more offense and some truly staggering numbers for the pair. Mara had a record setting 2045 campaign including NCAA marks for receptions (171) and receiving yards (2,465) and was named a first-team Division I-AA All-American. He also set a single-game NCAA record with 27 receptions against rival Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. By the end of the season the team was on the cusp of being named a top 10 ranked team in the nation and had expectations to exceed that next season.

Senior Season

As a senior in 2046, Mara was on-pace to shatter his own Division I-AA records from the previous season. The dynamic duo picked right up where they left off the prior season with intentions of winning a big bowl game. That was until tragedy struck on Friday October 19th, 2046 when the car Matthew Mara was driving was hit head-on by a distracted driver who crossed into his lane. Emergency responders were able to extract Mara and transport him to the hospital with severe injuries to both arms.

Mara spent the next week in the hospital recovering and then the next 6 months endured surgeries. All in hopes to repair the damage to his hands and give him the ability to resume his potential lucrative career that was cut abruptly short. Regardless of the outcome, his NCAA football career was over and so was the potential of a possible fairytale ending.

Post Grad

The accident weighed heavily Mara and he turned to his faith to lift him up during the darkest days. This ultimately lead him to the path of priesthood as he chose to hang up his pads and put on a robe. After graduating from Liberty University, Mara committed to his faith and pursued his masters degree in theology by attending Dallas Theological Seminary from 2047 to 2048. Shortly after completion of his masters, Matthew became ""Father Mara"" and joined the priesthood. He transferred back to his hometown of Philadelphia. As he returned, Father Mara re-united with an old flame from high-school who convinced him that he made a mistake and that he should leave the priesthood. Love-struck, Mara followed his heart and left the priesthood shortly after joining only to ultimately be rejected by his long lost love after informing her.

Heartbroken and lost, Mara turns his focus back to the field to put the pieces of his life back together. Nobody questions his legs or his raw ability but there are concerns as to how well his hands have healed and whether he can still catch the ball like he use to.

Season 2050

Matthew Mara joined the DSFL in the 35th season as a free agent just after the trade deadline closed. The London Royals picked him up from waivers to bolster the teams wide receiver core in preparation for a run at the playoffs. Despite winning 3 of their final 4 games, the Royals ultimately missed the playoffs and Mara finished his career with the team averaging 58.8 yards per game with 20 total catches for 235 yards and 1 touchdown in 4 games. As per league rules, at the end of the season Matthew Mara was placed into the draft pool for the season 36 DSFL draft.

With the 2nd overall pick in the 2050 DSFL entry draft, the Dallas Birddogs selected Matthew Mara.

Season 2051

Matthew Mara was joined at training camp by 3 other rookie wide receivers after the Dallas Birddogs drafted four total in the previous draft. Despite the stiff competition, Mara began the season as the Dallas Birddogs primary wide receiver and had a stellar first game in a tight 21-24 loss to the Tijuana Luchadores. Winning offensive player of the game with 8 catches for 107 yards and 2 touch downs.

The team continued to struggle despite Matthew Mara putting up decent numbers for a rookie wide receiver. It wasn't until week #9 that the Dallas Birddogs were able to win their first game of the season in a 36-6 blow out win against the Bondi Beach Buccaneers. Another game that Mara finished with the offensive player of the game with 6 catches for 115 yards and 2 touchdowns. Winning 3 of their last 6 games was too little, too late, for Mara and his Birddogs as they missed the playoffs with a 3-11 record.

Matthew Mara completes his DSFL rookie season averaging 93.3 yards per game with 84 total catches for 1,306 yards and 9 touchdowns. As per league rules, at the end of the season Matthew Mara was placed into the draft pool for the season 37 ISFL draft.

With the 2nd overall pick in the 2051 ISFL entry draft, the New York Silverbacks selected Matthew Mara.

Season 2052

The '52 season saw Mara return to his DSFL team, the Dallas Birddogs, for his 2nd and final season. Drafted 2nd overall by the New York Silverbacks of the ISFL, Mara (and the management team from New York) decided it was best for his growth to return to his DSFL team for a year of growth. It was Mara himself who really championed the idea to return to help the team that resurrected his career. This especially after such a tumultuous year on the field last season for the Dallas Birddogs team who went 2-12.

With the Silverbacks watching, Mara had an excellent season on the field which saw him finish the regular season with a league leading 1,506 receiving yards and the 4th most touch-downs with 11. Although a successful season, there were understandable concerns about the condition of Mara's hands after he recorded a staggering 26 dropped balls on the season. Something that the New York training staff are going to have to keep an eye on when he finally gets into their locker room.

For the Birddogs team, the season was an improvement and although the team never found any consistency, it won 4 more games than the previous season with a 7-7 record. Good enough for a trip to the playoffs although not good enough to make it beyond the first round as they faced a tough Bondi Beach Buccaneers team who knocked out the Dogs by a score of 31-21 on their way to a DSFL Championship.

With his DSFL career now completed, Mara packs his bags and takes his talents to one of the biggest stages on the planet. New York City. Where there will be no shortage of discussion about whether he has completely recovered from the surgeries on his hands in university and wether he can withstand the gruelling ISFL schedule and opponents.

Season 2053

Nearly seven years after his life and career threatening car accident, Matthew Mara finally achieved his dream of playing professional football when he suited up for his first game with the New York Silverbacks in a win against the San Jose SaberCats. A game where the rookie receiver made an big impact with 131 yards on only 4 receptions. Mara would later explain how emotional it really was and all the thoughts he had going through his head during that game. "Thank the Lord for giving me the strength. I can't believe it is actually happening and that I am able to fulfill this dream I never thought I would achieve. I can't even process it right now."

The very next game, Mara had the football world talking when he had 94 yards and caught 2 touchdowns in a win against the Orange County Otters in only his second game in the ISFL. The Silverbacks were the hot team, winning 5 of their first 6 games and Mara being an important piece to the success of the offense.

Unfortunately that would not last as the team and Mara hit a wall in the middle of the season by losing 5 of their next 6 games and erasing all the good they did at the start of the season. The team saw itself sitting at .500 and Mara has struggled for many of those losses and the buzz around him and the team began to quiet.

With a final push, the Silverbacks turned the losing around and ended up with 3 wins in 4 games and secured a playoff birth with a 9 and 7 record. Mara was exceptional in the wins with 121 yards and 1 touchdown against the Austin Copperheads, 128 yards and 1 touchdown against the Orange County Otters, and 98 yards and 1 touchdown against the Honolulu Hahalua to finish the season off.

The playoffs began with New York faced off against the San Jose SaberCats. A game that saw the Silverbacks win with authority 31 to 9. It was tight coverage as Mara was kept to a limited role with only 42 yards on 5 receptions.

The playoffs continued to the second round where the Silverbacks took on a tough Arizona Outlaws team. Mara once again found the playoffs to be a much different beast than the regular season, only managing 44 yards on 5 receptions. He did find the end-zone however with a touchdown in a losing effort. The Arizona Outlaws continued on and ended up winning the championship after defeating the NY Silverbacks in a close 31 to 28 game.

Although not a consistent season, Mara's overall impact would have to be looked at in a positive one. The rookie had over a thousand receiving yards with 1,117 and a solid 8 touchdowns. It was definitely a strong start to his career and Matthew will be looking to improve in his 2nd season and attempt to avoid the dreaded sophomore slump.

Season 2054

The sophomore season for Matthew began with high hopes after a great offseason training regiment and a strong training camp. The city was abuzz with the teams potential and the players were excited to return for a chance at redemption.

The start of the new season saw the New York Silverbacks immediately stumble out of the gates losing their first 2 games and finishing with a 1 and 3 record in their first 4 games. Mara had a strong initial game against the Orange County Otters in a close loss that saw him finish with 103 yards and a touchdown. Unfortunately for Mara, that would be the last time he would cross the 100 yard mark in the season. The sophomore slump reared its ugly head and Matthew Mara felt the full brunt of it this season.

As Mara struggled, so did the team, and New York found itself floundering through-out the entirety of the 2054 season. Losing one, then winning one, then losing two and so on. Not able to find any kind of stability or a winning streak as the highly regarded offense sputtered. Eventually the team and Mara hit rock bottom in a loss during week 6 against the Austin Copperheads where Mara found himself with 1 reception for 6 yards. The lowest total to date and perhaps the lowest point in his professional career. All that with the team dangerously close to missing the playoffs with a 2 and 4 record.

Week 7 saw the Silverbacks in Louisiana taking on the New Orleans Secondline. A game in which New York played their most spirited match of the season and Mara returned to form with 96 yards on 5 catches and 2 touchdowns. Ultimately that week 7 performance would be a mirage as the Silverbacks returned to their struggling ways, losing the next three matches in which Mara had 68 total yards in receiving combined.

By the week 13, the team found itself with 4 and 8 record and in need of running the gauntlet down the stretch to have any shot at the playoffs. The team performed well and won their first back to back of the season but they fell just short of the final playoff spot to the San Jose Sabercats. Matthew finished with 309 yards and 2 touchdowns in those final four games which saw New York winning 2, losing 1, and tying 1.

With that sophomore season done, Mara hopes that the new season will erase what most would consider a pretty disappointing season in all regards. It is another stepping stone in a professional career.

Season 2055

Matthew Mara's third season was a tumultuous one that saw him start the season off extremely poorly. It wasn't until Week #5 against the HON that he broke 50 yards receiving by finishing with 88 yards in a loss. It wasn't until a win in Week #6 against New Orleans Secondline that he caught his first touchdown pass of the season. To say that this was the worst start to his career so far, was an understatement. And to top things off, the team was struggling for it with 2 wins and 4 losses in their first 6 games of the season.

Although the win was nice, it didn't help stop the bleeding as the team and Mara continued to symbiotically tank. With another losing streak, this time 5 games, the New York Silverbacks saw themselves at an abysmal 2 wins and 9 losses at the 11 game mark with Mara still not breaking the 100 yard mark all season and sitting at only 1 touchdown on the season. Downright ugly.

It took until Week #15 in another loss against the Arizona Outlaws that Mara finally broke that 100 yard plateau when he caught 5 receptions for 121 yards and a touchdown. By far his best game of the season and although a loss. It was at least something to hopefully build on as a disappointing season dwindles to an end with a terrible 4 wins and 12 losses record.

Not a lot to like about the season but Matthew did pick his game up at the end. Hopefully a fresh offseason and a new approach will prove to be the medicine that is desperately needed.

Season 2056

Heading into his 4th professional season, Mara was still chasing his magnificent rookie season results. So far each season since has been more of a reclamation project building back up than a star player contributing wins. Mara's and the teams success go hand in hand so it is no surprise that the entire team has been also following that same path.

The New York Silverbacks as a whole looked like a hungry team ready to redeem their less than successful season prior. With a strong 3-1 pre-season, they came out with energy and won a 38 to 35 battle against the Baltimore Hawks . A game in-which Mara reached 100 yards in receiving and scored 2 touchdowns. A great start to a new season for team and player.

The hopes of the Silverback nation was dashed quite quickly soon after as the team proceeded to lose the next 4 games. A series of losses where Mara never managed to receive for more than 65 yards but added 2 more touchdowns to his season totals. The team now sitting a 1 and 4 to start the season in what feels like a pattern every season.

Games 6 and 7 were gutsy wins by a team looking to turn around its dismal season. Mara recorded a touchdown in each of those wins to bring his season total to 6. Just 2 shy of his record 8 in a season. These impressive wins didn't seem to help turn the tide as the team then went on a 3 game losing streak where the teams offense managed to squeak out 21 total combined points in those 3 losses. Even with a 90 yard receiving game for Mara, it was no help as the team hit an ugly 3 and 7 record for the season after 10 games.

The team managed to trade wins and losses the next 5 games with a 2 game winning streak to finish the season including a 128 yard receiving game with 1 touchdown against the New Orleans Secondline . With season 42 in the books, the New York Silverbacks finished strong with a not great 7 and 9 record.

Matthew Mara was 15 yards shy of his second 1,000 yard season but did manage to break his personal record for most touchdowns in a season with 10. Perhaps not a "star" level season but I think there is potential still with this player. His steady improvements in all areas of his game have started to show and now it is about consistency. Can he do it every game and not just a couple per season. As Mara goes, so do the Silverbacks or vice-versa. Either way, this symbiotic relationship needs to get on track before time slips by.

Season 2057

Matthew Mara's 5th professional season and an important one. There has been a lot of talk about Mara's game and if it would ever live up to his hyped rookie season. Even more important than that, the New York Silverbacks team was looking to turn things around and become competitive again after several subpar seasons. There was a lot of talk surrounding the team and the season started with more hype than usual.

Unfortunately, things don't go as planned and the Silverbacks came out flat and lost their first two games of the season. After the terrible season prior, the environment around the team was a bit volatile at this point with fans point a lot of fingers at the offense and specifically Mara and his 35 yard receiving average per game to start the season.

Mara answered those critics with a 129 yard performance in a 31 to 10 win against the Colorado Yeti . Adding another 81 yards and his first touchdown of the season in game #4 in a 24 to 14 win against the New Orleans Secondline . Despite the two wins, the team continued to sputter by exchanging wins and losses over the next 4 games and Mara not making much of an impact. Resulting in a stagnant 3 and 4 start to the season.

Week 8 is when things began to change. The team came out with purpose and executed perfectly to a 31 to 9 win on the road against the Berlin Fire Salamanders . That win seemed to propel them to a 6 game winning streak seeing them with a strong 9 and 4 record going into week 14 which ultimately broke the streak with a 27 to 13 loss to the Cape Town Crash .

Week 15 was Mara's biggest week of the season (and maybe his career) with a 139 yards and 2 touchdown winning game at New Orleans Secondline. Finally the season ending with a satisfying 36 to 16 win over the Honolulu Hahalua . Completing the season with a 11 and 5 record to secure 2nd place in the ASFC .

Mara fell just short of matching his career rookie yardage by 6 yards. However, it was finally a return to the 1,000+ yard club with 1,111 total. A pretty successful season and one that kept the doubters at bay.

The playoffs didn't quite go so well as the Honolulu Hahalua won easily with a 27 to 7 victory in the first round of the playoffs. A disappointing ending to a great season. One that the Silverbacks will be looking to build on and take another shot at the playoffs.

Season 2058

The New York fandom was tentatively hopeful to begin the season after the team looked strong finishing the previous year. Matthew Mara, as well as some other key Silverback players, were in their prime and looking to finally make an impact and they didn't disappoint.

The New York Silverbacks came out ready to play by going 5 and 0 to start the season, starting with a dominant home opener resulting in a 37 to 21 victory against the Arizona Outlaws. Week two saw an even larger 40 to 21 win against the Orange County Otters which Mara contributed 129 yards and 1 touchdown. The next two wins were on the road against the New Orleans Secondlines (by the score of 30 to 14) and the Honolulu Hahalua (by the score of 25 to 24) both of which Matthew Mara managed to get a receiving touchdown in. With a final 26 to 18 win at home against the Austin Copperheads.

After such a blazing start to the season, especially on the offensive side of the ball, the team was feeling pretty good about itself and its game. Week 6 and 7 though proved not to get too cocky as a back to back home losses against San Jose SaberCats (by the score of 41 to 31) and Cape Town Crash (by the score of 29 to 9) saw New York drop to a 5 - 2 record going into week 8.

The team though, proved its resilience and didn't let those losses get them down by winning out the rest of their regular season games with a 9 and 0 record going the rest of the way. In one of the most dominant runs in franchise history (or at least Mara history), the team won by more than a touchdown in each game minus the last one on the road against the SaberCats (34 to 28 win). With a league best 14 and 2 record, the Silverbacks clinched a first round bye in the playoffs.

The playoffs found the Silverbacks facing off against the Copperheads in the Quarterfinals after New York got the first round bye. It was a close game with Austin leading at the half 20 to 17 but the Silverbacks offense was too difficult to stop and the defense put on a clinic and proceeded to win 31 to 20 moving on to face the Outlaws in the Semifinals.

The semifinals proved to be a battle right to the end as the Silverbacks offense was once again too potent at the end of the game to shutdown. With a 20 to 13 win, the New York Silverbacks found themselves in the Ultimus Bowl for the first time in Mara's career. They face off against the NSFC champions the Baltimore Hawks who went 13 - 2 - 1 in the regular season as the 2nd best team in the league.

The Ultimus Championship was one for the ages as both teams battled it out over the four quarters. The Hawks managed to squeeze out some points in a few possessions in the first half and stopped the Silverbacks offense from getting established. A worrying trend that the Silverbacks were able to overcome in all of their previous playoff matchups. Unfortunately for the New York faithful, a late push to score 10 points wasn't quite enough as time ran out and the Baltimore Hawks secured the championship with a 16 to 10 win.

A heartbreaking end to a dream season. Although not a great playoff performance by Matthew Mara who wasn't able to find much room on the field, he did have a great regular season. His best year to date with 1,120 yards (his personal best by 3 yards beating his previous best of 1,117 in his rookie season). He also matched his personal best of 10 touchdowns with only 1 drop and 1 fumble.

Season 2059

Coming off of 2 straight seasons of 1,000+ receiving yards, Matthew Mara was riding high going into his 7th professional season. The team had a shortened off-season with the previous playoff run and it there is a lot of hope riding on this core group to finally get over the hump.

The beginning of the season was not one for the highlight reels as far as Matthew Mara goes. There were struggles early on adapting to some of the new routes and the younger WR Robinson stepped up and found himself replacing Mara in many of the routes. The team started out with a 4 and 1 record so it was a successful line-up adjustment from a team perspective.

There were reports of some frustration with Mara's game after a huge 14 to 20 loss to the Baltimore Hawks . This was the re-match to last seasons Ultimus Championships and the New York Silverbacks wanted to make a statement. Unfortunately, Mara finished the game with only 1 reception in the game as Robinson finished with 8 and 106 yards and a touchdown despite the loss.

Over the course of the next 5 weeks the Silverbacks flip flopped their way to a 7 and 4 record and Mara's inability to breakout stopped becoming a streak and started becoming a trend. Now 11 weeks into the season and Mara has shockingly not scored a receiving touchdown yet. The yards per game and per catch way down on top of that, things are starting to look like time may be catching up to the star wide receiver.

Finally in a 28 to 27 win against the Arizona Outlaws , Matthew Mara managed to catch what would be his only touch down of the season. New York surged down the stretch despite the reduced role of Mara finishing with a 5 and 1 record in their final 6. Ending the season in 2nd place in the ASFC with a record of 11 and 5. Only being surpassed by the 12 and 4 Honolulu Hahalua .

Mara's worst regular season of his career finished with 666 yards. A worrisome number for the Seminary School graduate who was just happy to help his team in whatever way he was able to. That number though didn't feel random and felt like a sign that the time may come to retire at the end of the season.

Round one of the playoffs saw Mara have maybe his best game of the season with a 66 yard performance and 1 touchdown in a huge 27 to 24 win against the Austin Copperheads . New York moved on to face the Honolulu Hahalua but ultimately lost in a close 16 to 19 battle. A game in which Mara once again performed very well despite the loss with a team leading 78 yards. Not the best game but still showed that he had some gas left in the tank.

A very difficult season personally for Mara as he found himself looking at his game changing from what he expected from himself. However, with the playoff performances, the talk of retirement is put on the back-burner as Mara confirmed that as long as New York wanted him back, he'd return for his 8th season.

Season 2060

And so it begins again...
