Ultimini XXXVII was an American football game played to determine the champion of the Developmental Simulation Football League (DSFL) for 2054 (S39). The Northern Football Conference (Tay Swizzle North) champion Kansas City Coyotes defeated the Southern Football Conference (Laszlo Forty-Two South) champion Norfolk Seawolves, 44-20, to win their 3rd Ultimini Bowl championship in 8 appearances. The game was played at Taco Bell Stadium in the United States. This was the 4th time in which the Kansas City Coyotes matched up with the Norfolk Seawolves in an Ultimini Bowl. The Seawolves won the previous matchups in Ultimini XXI and Ultimini XXXIII while the Coyotes emerged victorious in Ultimini XXXVI and Ultimini XXXVII. This was also the 2nd consecutive meeting between these 2 franchises in the Ultimini Bowl. Both of those 2 being won by the Kansas City Coyotes.

Background

Teams

The Tay Swizzle North was represented by the Kansas City Coyotes, and the Laszlo Forty-Two South was represented by the Norfolk Seawolves.

Norfolk Seawolves

The Norfolk Seawolves went into Ultimini XXXVII after posting a record of 9-5, which was tied with the Coyotes in the Tay Swizzle North for 2nd best in the league. The Norfolk Seawolves were first place in the Laszlo Forty-Two South for the 2nd consecutive season. 3rd year veteran RB Henry Oswald-Newman led the best rushing offence in the DSFL. Oswald-Newman finished the season top 5 in all major rushing statistics. Due to production from him and fellow teammates Hot Chocolate and rookie Howard Coward, The Seawolves managed to place first in total rushing yards and 2nd in yards per attempt. The offence led by rookie QB Rocky Franklin III was the same story as last year, as they finished 2nd to last in passing yards per game. The stout Seawolves defence also didn't change much from last season, as they were first in points, total yards and rushing yards allowed within their conference and led the league in intercepted passes by a mile with 25. Julius McMiller had yet another stellar season at free safety, racking up a league leading 9 Interceptions and 2 def touchdowns. The Seawolves were rightfully named as strong contenders to win their conference and possibly the Ultimini going into the playoffs.

Kansas City Coyotes

The Kansas Coyotes headed into the season as the defending champions, winners of Ultimini XXXVI. The Coyotes ended the season with a 9-5 record that was tied for 2nd best in the league and good for 2nd in the conference behind the Minnesota Grey Ducks. The seeding of the Laszlo Forty-Two South conference was quite interesting. The Coyotes won the most games in their conference and technically tied for most wins in the entire league but finished in 2nd place in their conference as a result of Minnesota's 2 ties. They also just held off the Portland Pythons who had a tie instead of the extra win. Kansas City finished 2nd place due to either point differential or points scored since they tied Minnesota on winning percentage, head to head, and conference records. The Coyotes also led a very well balanced team, the offense being led by quarterback Creg Jerrith IV who threw for 3,464 yards, 25 touchdowns, and just 8 interceptions on the year. The team also featured one of the top backs in the DSFL as well in Sherwin Blue Jr. who had 1,293 yards and 11 touchdowns. Thanks to these 2 standout players the Coyotes averaged 26.7 points per game, which was 2nd best in the league, averaged 395.9 total yards per game, which was best in the league, averaged 135.9 rushing yards per game which was third best in the league, and averaged 260.0 passing yards per game, which was 4th best in the league. On defence the Coyotes boasted the leagues best defense, anchored by linebackers Big Bad Wolf and Jimmy Crystal they averaged 19.9 points per game, which was best in the league.

Playoffs

Norfolk started off with a hard fought victory against the 8-6 Dallas Birdogs in the Semifinals, getting out of there with a 3 point victory in the 30-27 outing. LB Kenny McCormick was the primary defensive standout ending the spectacular day with 8 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

The Coyotes beat the 1st seeded Grey Ducks in a fairly no nonsense 31-21 victory which saw the Coyotes never give up the lead. The primary offensive standout of this game was TE Clint Mustache who went for 112 yards on 5 receptions to lead the Coyotes to their 2nd straight Ultimini Bowl and 8th Ultimini appearance all time. The game would be a rematch of Ultimini XXXVI which occurred a year ago.

Game summary

First Quarter

The game started with the Coyotes kicking off to Franklin III and the Seawolves, who didn't manage to move the sticks at all, punting it to the Coyotes. Creg Jerrith IV and the Coyotes quickly moved down the field and into Seawolves territory. The drive however stalled out and they elected to kick a FG to bounce out to a early 3-0 lead. On the subsequent kickoff, rookie Howard Coward was able to return it 99 yards for a touchdown. Something we don't see much especially on the big stage. The 2 teams exchanged punts to end the 1st quarter with a score of 7-3 Seawolves.

Second Quarter

The defensive stand continued in the second with the teams exchanging punts and sacks much like the first quarter but the Coyotes managed to break through with a 1 play bomb by Creg Jerrith IV throwing a touchdown pass to Clint Mustache. This put the score at 10-7 for the Coyotes. The Seawolves offence continued to struggle as they went scoreless in the 2nd.

Third Quarter

The Coyotes got the ball to start the second half, and Jerrith IV promptly led the Coyotes down the field, picking apart the Seawolves defence. Jerrith IV then found WR Blippy Shpoopy for the 23 yard score. The suffocating Coyotes defense then forced QB Rocky Franklin III to throw an inexplicable interception in their own territory as Creg Jerrith IV led the Coyotes down for their second straight touchdown drive, this time with a touchdown pass to Clint Mustache. The Coyotes had broken the game open, taking a 7-24 lead as the energy was sucked out of the crowd at the Taco Bell Stadium. On the Seawolves subsequent drive QB Franklin III readily led the Seawolves down the field, throwing his first TD of the night to Big McLarge Huge. With the Coyotes turning the ball over quickly thereafter with a Mathias Mayhem INT, the Seawolves were able to capitalize with QB Franklin III throwing his 2nd TD of the quarter this time to Vinny Blasmic (extra point being missed) to completely shift the momentum. This put the score at a closely contested 20-24. With the Coyotes once again giving the ball back with no answer, Franklin III got the ball back looking to seize the lead, Instead he then proceeded to have another inexplicable turnover in Seawolves territory which led to a chip in 1 yard TD pass from Mathias Mayhem to WR Honey Badger for the Coyotes as they took a two score lead with practically no time remaining in the quarter.

Fourth Quarter

With the momentum shifting back in the Coyotes favour, The Seawolves started with the ball this quarter and couldn't get anything going as the drive that stalled in KCC territory ended in a missed FG. The Coyotes with the chance to practically put the game away for good, did just that as Blippy Shpoopy caught his 2nd TD of the day from Mayhem. The Seawolves offensive woes continued after that as they would go scoreless in the 4th and the Coyotes running up the score with a rushing TD by WR Blippy Shpoopy and kicking in 2 field goals, the latter with 18 seconds to go. The game ended with the Seawolves still on their end of the field as time expired. The Coyotes won, 44-20 in a smothering 4th quarter.

Creg Jerrith IV was named the Ultimini Offensive Player of the Game as his 2 touchdown to 0 interception performance made him a worthy recipient. On the other side of the ball rookie defensive stalwart Synystyr Gates was named the Ultimini Bowl Defensive Player of the Game for his 7 tackle, 1 sack, 1 interception and 1 passes defenced performance.
