Background

Teams

The DSFL North was represented by the Kansas City Coyotes, and the DSFL South was represented by the Norfolk Seawolves.

Norfolk Seawolves

The Norfolk Seawolves went into Ultimini XXXVI after posting a record of 8-6, which was surprisingly enough to comfortably lead the South, as no other team in the division had a above 500 record. The 2nd place London Royals boasted the opposite record of the Seawolves of 6-8 and the division also consisted of a winless 0-14 Bondi Beach Buccaneers. Many critics say this was one of the least competitive years the South has seen ever. The Norfolk Seawolves were first place in the South after finishing last the year prior. 2nd year veteran RB Aaron Ford led the best rushing offence in the DSFL. Ford finished the season with respectable rushing numbers however due to production from him and fellow teammates QB Roque Santa Cruz and rookie Oswald-Newman who all went for 700+ yards and 6 TDs apiece, The Seawolves managed to place first in total rushing yards, 1st in yards per attempt and 1st in TDs all by a mile. The passing offence led by QB Roque Santa Cruz however finished bottom of the league in passing statistics league wide. The stout Seawolves defence was the best in their conference, as they were first in points, total yards and rushing yards allowed within their conference and led the league in intercepted passes by a mile with 28. Duo Eric Belmont and Brooks Piggot had stellar seasons at Conerback, racking up a league leading 9 & 7 Interceptions respectively. The Seawolves were rightfully named as the strongest contenders to win their historically bad conference and possibly the Ultimini going into the playoffs.

Kansas City Coyotes

The Kansas City Coyotes absolutely dominated the regular season, leading their division (the North) comfortably with a 13-1 record. The coyotes roared to a 2-0 record with victories over the London Royals and Portland Pythons, winning both games comfortably. They ended up losing their only game of the season a week later, in week 3, to the Grey Ducks 31-10, in a game where QB Jerrith IV just couldn't get it going through the air with 2 ints and 0 TDs. After this loss to the Minnesota Greybucks they ended up winning the remainder of their games, ending the season with an 11-game winning streak. The winning streak, though wasn't without It's nail biters such as week 11 against the Norfolk Seawolves, where a game-winning field goal was scored by the Coyotes for a final score of 10-7. The Coyotes also led a very well balanced team, the offense being led by superstar trio consisting of quarterback Creg Jerrith IV who threw 25 TDs. The team also featured one of the top backs in the DSFL as well in Sherwin Blue Jr, who had 1419 yards and 9 touchdowns as well as WR1 Johnny Blaze Jr who ended the year breaking the 1100 yard threshold along with snagging 11 TDs. Thanks to these 3 standout players the Coyotes averaged 26 ppg, averaged the most total yards in the league at 375.9 per game, rushed the 2nd most per game at 124.3 yards per game, and passed for 251.6 yards per game, good for 2nd most in the league. Conversely, the Coyotes defense allowed a league best 15.6 ppg, a league best 296.6 total yards per game, a league best 75.9 rushing yards per game, and allowed 220.8 passing yards per game, fifth best in the league.

Playoffs

Norfolk started their playoff journey on the road against the Tijuana Luchadores in the semifinals round, the game was a blowout win for the Seawolves with the game being over before the 4th quarter even started. As they boasted a 42 to 14 lead. QB Roque Santa Cruz was the primary reason for the Seawolves outstanding win, ending the spectacular day with 4 TD passes thrown to 0 Interceptions, missing only 1 throw the entire game as they were granted their 3rd Ultimini appearance.

The Coyotes started off at home against the inferior Grey Ducks who put up a fight. The score was 14-14. The game went down to the wire as the two teams traded scores until the Coyotes got a stop and managed to score on their final drive of the game as time expired , as they won 34-24. The player who played the most vital role in this win was RB Sherwin Blue Jr who saw himself finish with just over 100 yards rushing, a rushing TD and a receiving TD to lead the Coyotes to their 10th Ultimini appearance all time.

Game summary

First Quarter

Ultimini XXXVI started with a tentative beginning as both teams exchanged sacks, miscues and punts all throughout the 1st. Neither defence breaking. Until finally late in the 1st the Seawolves engineered a drive deep into Kansas City Coyote territory. The 1st ended with the Seawolves on 4th down at the Coyotes 8 yard line, the score being 0-0.

Second Quarter

The Seawolves made the 22 yard field goal to start the 2nd, however the 2 teams continued to struggle on offence, just not being able to get anything through the ground nor the air as the frustration was palpable on the face of Creg Jerrith IV. He was especially frustrated at the state of the offensive line as they were being absolute pummeled by the versatile Norfolk defensive line. Fronky Fresh and Good Player both got in damaging sacks against the young gunslinger. The quarter ended with the Yotes missing a potential game tying field goal.

Third Quarter

The 2nd half for the Seawolves started off much like the end of the first half, with another 4 and out including back to back sacks on Roque Santa Cruz one for a saftey, deep in their own territory. The Coyotes finally managed to get on the board with a couple minutes left in the third quarter, as Lord Farquaads snuck behind Norfolk's coverage for a receiving touchdown. The subsequent 2 point attempt was successful as RB Sherwin Blue Jr walked it in.

Fourth Quarter

With momentum on the Coyotes side, they started with the ball as Creg Jerrith IV engineered a drive that resulted in Blue Jr's 2nd TD of the night to take a definitive 17-3 lead to end the game. The 2 teams traded stout defensive standouts for the rest of the game. The Coyotes were officially crowned DSFL Ultimini Champions after a stifling 17-3 performance against the Seawolves.

Sherwin Blue Jr was named the Ultimini Offensive Player of the Game as he went for 98 total yards and a TD. On the other side of the ball defensive stalwart Caleb Hayden was named the Ultimini Bowl Defensive Player of the Game for his 9 tackle, 1 sack, 1 saftey and 1 forced fumble performance.
