Marty Crane (born January 4, 2037) is an American football runningback for the Dallas Birddogs of the Developmental Simulation Football League (DSFL).

Early years

Marty Crane was born in the Seattle portion of Miami where his love for football, justice, and jack russel terriers grew. As a high schooler / junior police officer Marty set school records in rushing yards, touchdowns, and citizen's arrests. Marty was briefly suspended during his Senior year after he was found drinking underage at a local establishment "Duke's". He still went on to win the rushing title and lead his team to the FL state title game where he scored five touchdowns and gave out 6 parking tickets. Shortly after his high school hosted "Marty Crane Day" where the football team held a fundraiser for terriers in need of adoption. Marty was offered scholarships to 16 of the top football schools in the nation before ultimately deciding to attend the University of Miami due to their top tier coaching staff, world class facilities, and their proximity to the Ballantine's Brewery.

College career

At the University of Miami, Marty began his career as the third string RB due to concerns about his size. These durability questions were quickly answered in the third game of his Freshman season when Marty filled in for Frank Juggs and Lamar Sockingsly who were both out with a stomach virus. Marty carried the ball 35 times for 312 yards and 6 TDs that game. He would not relinquish the starting role for the next three seasons leading the conference in yards on the ground, touch downs, and once again citizen's arrests. While Marty's onfield production was truly impressive, his stats in the classroom were less so forcing him to repeat several failed classes to maintain his student-athlete eligibility. Marty's bust sits in the University of Miami Hall of Fame honoring his tremendous speed, skill, and production at the school. It is believed that he will also be added to the school's Ring of Honor during his rookie season in the DSFL.

After an impressive three years at the University of Miami, Marty Crane entered the DSFL draft class for 43rd Season of the league. While working closely with his unknown agent, Marty the Monster, Marty Crane pushed in the prospect games to display his raw talent and trademark slippery shoulders to catch the eyes of GMs. It was argued that he was the clearcut top RB during these contests, yet to the surprise of many Marty Crane slid down draft boards while GMs were actually on the clock. It is possible his off the field issues from college concerned teams. It may have been that his agent was clearly intoxicated during the combine. It certainly could have been tied to Marty attempting to perform a citizen's arrest on a rival running back entering the draft, Maple Dogwood, for littering in the draft room while the commissioner was giving his opening speech. Regardless of the reason, Marty Crane was not selected until the 7th round of the draft (pick 52) by the Dallas Birddogs.

DSFL Career

Season 43

Marty Crane began his first season in the DSFL as the third string running back behind second year lead, Reginald Arceneaux, and fellow rookie, Maple Dogwood. The trio wound up playing a major role in Dallas having a 9-4-1 record and winning the South. While it was a fight for carries all year long, Marty posted a respectable 4.7 yards per carry and 494 rushing yards on 105 attempts. His receiving average was more impressive at 11.7 yards per catch for 164 yards on 14 catches. Crane proved to bring his explosiveness with him from Coral Gables by having 3 carries over 20 yards and 1 over 40. He found the endzone 3 times on the ground, fumbled once, and continued to improve as the year went on. While Dallas was near dominant against all teams not originating from Portland, they suffered a disappointing loss in the first round of the playoffs to Tijuana preventing a rematch with the champion Pythons. Overall, it was a solid start for young Crane who once again found himself having to climb the depth chart and prove he belongs.

Season 44

Entering season 44, Marty Crane fans had abundant reason for optimism. Marty was the clear cut lead back in Dallas after maxing his TPE (for DSFL) and seeing his main competition for carries in Dallas last year, Dogwood Maple, get called up in the offseason. It seemed like Marty would likely become a bellcow back for the Birddogs and compete for the rushing title against the league’s best. Unfortunately, that opportunity seemed to never really materialize as Marty wound up once again acting as one of two backs splitting carries despite having nearly 200 TPE more than the rookie he was partnered up with. For whatever reason, the rookie wound up having 150+ carries while averaging significantly less yards per carry (1.3 YPC less). While Marty did well with the ball when given the chance by averaging 4.3 YPC for 737 yards and 3 touchdowns on 160 carries, he once again was not a part of the pro bowl conversation as the top backs had literally twice as many carries. A disappointing end to what could have been a breakout season.

Season 45

Following the end of season 44, Marty met with Dallas and Chicago leadership to discuss the future of the franchises and his career. It was unanimously decided that he would be able to help the teams going forward by transitioning from running back to safety. After studying the playbook, practicing his back pedal until his heels bled, and watching film 10 hours a day, Marty was ready to start for Dallas at the SS position. Crane would be sharing deep centerfield with his longtime teammate and best friend, Dewey Greenbeans. The two performed excellently all season, helping Dallas to once again reach the playoffs. As a first year SS Marty contributed 60 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 INT, and 6 passes defensed. He was primarily used in the pass rush and run defense. Following a painful loss in the playoffs to Tijuana, Marty received word that his efforts had earned him a spot in the big leagues. Next stop: Chicago.

ISFL Career

Season 46

Following the conclusion of the prior season Marty Crane received the big call. It was time to bid farewell to his brothers in Dallas who he had fought, bled, and eaten a lot of tacos with. It was time to pack his bags. And it was time to board the plane for the big leagues and his new home, Chicago. Butchers brass slotted Marty in at starting free safety at the start of the season and he did not disappoint. The year in the DSFL learning the defensive side of the ball paid off with Crane immediately making an impact in the bigs. Marty finished the season second in interceptions with 7 (1 behind the leader) while also posting 57 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries, 2 sacks, 12 passes defended, and a defensive touchdown. Unfortunately, Chicago was going through a rebuilding year and missed the playoffs. Regardless, it was an explosive rookie season for Crane earning him the Defensive Player of the Year award and First Team All Pro honors.
