Lionel Jellyroll Scrimmage (born August 4, 2032) is an American football defensive tackle for the New York Silverbacks of the National Simulation Football League (ISFL).

Early years
Lionel Scrimmage was born to parents Jack and Ava Scrimmage on August 4, 2032. Lionel's father worked as an insurance agent for heavy equipment/vehicles for farming and industry and his mother was a crane operator for a local construction company. Lionel had a comfortable upbringing and was known to be a quiet and passive child. Not very outgoing, he struggled to make friends and so was encouraged by his parents to take up football. Not very athletic and a bit overweight, Lionel was coached on the defensive line in his early years and took a liking to the strategic and technical part of the position in terms of positioning, body control, etc. In high school, he made the varsity squad his freshman year as a defensive tackle. His junior year of high school, Lionel's father was diagnosed with kidney disease and needed a transplant. Lionel struggled with the decision of whether to give up football--and his main opportunity to go to college given his poor grades--and donate part of his kidney to save his father, or to make the self-serving choice to protect his health and future football career. Lionel eventually decided to give up his football future and get tested for an organ match, which in the end came up negative. He continued to look after his ailing father as he finished out his high school football year as it took over a year to find a suitable match for a kidney transplant. It was not until the summer before Lionel joined Eastern Michigan college that his father was announced healthy after a successful transplant.
College career
Lionel underwent a significant transformation during his final years of high school and into his freshman year of college. Supporting his father through his illness and confronting hardship for the first time in his life, Lionel became more industrious. At Eastern Michigan, he devoted himself to his dual pursuits of football and kidney disease awareness and prevention. While he did not see much playing time in his freshman year of college, he made the most of his time on the field and the coaches saw significant improvement as he dedicated himself to the physical training aspect of his position much more than he had in high school. This complemented his already strong grasp of the mental and technical aspects of the game. He became a regular contributor in his sophomore season and finished as a key starter and leader of the defensive squad in his junior and senior years.
In addition to his football training, Lionel spent his time in college on his major in communications and in raising money for health philanthropies with his fraternity--Sigma Chi.

DSFL career
Season 38 (2053): Lionel Scrimmage entered the DSFL part-way through the 2053 season, playing as a waiver pick by the struggling Bondi Beach Buccaneers. Scrimmage started in the final 4 games of the season with the team, which finished the season with an abysmal 0-16. Scrimmage made a middling DSFL debut with 10 tackles and 1 sacks.
Season 39 (2054): Heading into the 2054 season, Lionel Scrimmage officially declared eligibility for the DSFL draft. Given his lackluster performance as a waiver player, Scrimmage fell to the 3rd round where he was drafted by the London Royals. Scrimmage was the fourth defensive lineman drafted. Lionel Scrimmage greatly enjoyed his full rookie season with the London Royals. The team finished the season with a 5-9 record, and Scrimmage used the press conference after their week 4 away win against the Bondi Beach Buccaneers (final score of 27-14) to reflect on how he had never felt at home in Bondi Beach where they seemed to make losing a point of pride. Scrimmage, who always put his all on the field, only started in 6 of the 14 games for the Royals, but made an impact on the field all season long. He recorded 32 tackles, 4 for a loss, 1 forced fumble, and 7 sacks, showing strong improvement over the season.
ISFL career
Season 40 (2055): The year 2055 was an incredible moment for Lionel, who after playing in the DSFL for a season, became eligible for the ISFL draft. Playing a position of need for many teams in the league who were struggling with aging defensive lines, there was much anticipation of where Lionel would be drafted and he was rumored to be a first round prospect. And when draft day came, the results did not disappoint. While most of the rumors had Lionel being drafted to the Orange County Otters with the third overall pick, the Otters passed on the DT and he was drafted fifth overall to the New York Silverbacks. Lionel was excited about his new home, but was also apprehensive on hearing that he would be asked to play for the team immediately with no more time to spend developing his skills. And despite investing significant time in the training room during the offseason to prepare, Lionel struggled on the field in the ISFL field. Despite starting all 16 games, he only recorded 19 tackles, 1 TFL, and 3 sacks and the team ended at the bottom of the rankings. However, not one to be disheartened by adversity, Lionel has only doubled down his training to prepare for season 41.
Season 41 (2056): The year 2056 saw Lionel come into his own in the ISFL. Building on his first year of experience in the league, he changed his training regime and began focusing on critical areas of his game, such as tackling form and technique and block shedding. As soon as the regular season started, Lionel was putting his training to use on the field, but it wasn't until the fourth game of the season where he scored his first sack against opposing quarterback Nova Montagne. He carried that momentum into the next game of the season, where he scored his second sack. And the plays kept coming. In the locker room after the week 10 game, Lionel received his first game ball of the season from the team for his performance totaling a sack, two TFLs, and a forced fumble. In Week 13, Lionel received his second game ball from the New York Silverbacks for his contribution to a rousing 41-0 win over the New Orleans Second Line in which he registered two sacks and a forced fumble and fumble recovery. Starting in all 16 games, Lionel's season stats totaled 65 tackles, 6 TFLs, 11 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 1 fumble recovery. As Lionel's improved performance earned him a spot as an All-Pro 2nd team defensive tackle--a great achievement for a second-year player in the league.
Season 42 (2057): Lionel's third season in the ISFL as a New York Silverback and his performance hit a bit of a plateau. While he continued to train hard, and improved his ability to stop run plays behind the line of scrimmage, he just wasn't able to as consistently make it to the quarterback for those illusive sacks. While the previous season Lionel put up 8 sacks, this season he only registered 2: one in week 5 in an away game loss to the Honolulu Hahalua and the second in week 8 in an away game win against the Berlin Fire Salamanders. Never one to be discouraged, Lionel rallied around his team's success as they finished the regular season with an 11-5 record to secure the ASFC second seed in the playoffs. He carried that momentum into his first ISFL playoff appearance, making a crucial sack on Honolulu's Nova Montagne at the end of the first quarter. Sadly this wasn't enough to reverse the momentum Honolulu was building and the Silverbacks lost 7-27; but Lionel is looking forward to climbing the next cliff on his journey of continuous self-improvement.
Season 43 (2058): It was a great season for the New York Silverbacks. The team set a franchise record finishing the regular season with 14 wins and only 2 losses. Securing home-field advantage in the playoffs, the team beat out the Arizona Outlaws in the ASFC championship game (20-13). While the team eventually lost the Ultimus match to the Baltimore Hawks, 10-16, all players entered the offseason bolstered by the team success. And there was no player more energized by the team's performance as Lionel Scrimmage, having personally had a lackluster personal performance in terms of stats. Starting all 16 games of the season, Lionel was involved in fewer plays compared to last season, registering only 33 tackles (compared to 44 the previous year). However, Lionel's work on technique to break through the offensive line and in terms of forcing fumbles started to pay off. He put up 5 sacks and forced two fumbles, which his teammates were able to recover.
