Early years
Although born in San Francisco, Tyler Genis moved to central California at the age of 14. Throughout his high school football career, Tyler specialized as a defensive end where he flourished despite his slender frame. Tyler attributes his high skill level at the position from his training he gained as a wrestler during the winter season, learning proper leverage and body mechanics. Although his agility was a valuable asset, he did not perform considerable well on the offense as a wide receiver due to his poor catching ability which he always blamed on his nerves. Thankfully, when he was recruited to Fresno State, the coaching staff were able to bring out Tyler's full potential as a press man to man corner who could beat players at the line and limit separation.
College career
As a true freshman in 2015, Tyler did not start but was utilized in short yardage situations. Tyler collected 24 tackles and only allowed 6 catches to his receivers out of 19 pass attempts (31% completion percentage). The following year, Tyler earned a starting position where he collected 41 tackles. Although he did not have an inteception, he collected an impressive 18 pass deflections. He played at Fresno State for two more years where his performance continued to slowly improve from there, and he was fortunate enough to not suffer any major injury throughout his football career.
