This did not impress his father, a grape farmer, who though Tex (who ironically has never been to Texas) was wasting his time reading books about elves and other nonsense.
To toughen up Tex, his father forced him to play football in his freshman year. Tex took to it immediately. Tex played on the freshman team but made it to varsity his sophomore year in high school.
Tex never stopped reading his fantasy books and even started playing D&D without his father knowing.
