Accepted to Northwestern on an academic scholarship, Richard D'Attoria joined the team as a walk-on. In his freshman year in 2026, he only played in one game, recording a single tackle. He redshirted the following year, working on an computer science degree. In his sophomore year, he played in all 14 games and even started 3 towards the end of the year. Against Ohio State in Week 12, he notched his first career sack. In NU's bowl game, he recorded 8 tackles and his first interception, earning him the starting SS job for his junior year. D'Attoria started the year slow, totaling just 7 tackles over the first three games, but in Week 4 against Illinois, he exploded on to the scene with 11 tackles and 3 TFLs, and in Week 12 he racked up 7 tackles, a sack, and two interceptions, earning him Big 10 defensive player of the week honors. He finished the season with 74 tackles, 11 TFLs, 8 sacks, 11 PDs, and 5 picks. Despite suspicion that he might be picked in the upcoming DSFL draft, he returned to school for his senior year in which he exploded on to the scene immediately.
