Richard D'Attoria V (born January 9, 2005) is an American football safety for the Philadelphia Liberty of the National Simulation Football League (NSFL). He played college football for Northwestern University and was drafted 15th overall to the Portland Pythons of the Developmental Simulation Football League (DSFL). He played S14 with the eventual Ultimini-winning Pythons, earning a Pro Bowl nod, before being drafted 9th overall to the Liberty.

Early years

D'Attoria V was born to two immigrant parents and, as the oldest of three children, was responsible for caretaking in his spare time. His family straddled the poverty line, and he tutored children to earn money for dinner. As he got older, his family situation leveled out, letting him focus more on his academic responsibilities.

College career

Accepted to Northwestern on an academic scholarship, Richard D'Attoria joined the team as a walk-on. In his freshman year in 2026, he only played in one game, recording a single tackle. He redshirted the following year, working on an computer science degree. In his sophomore year, he played in all 14 games and even started 3 towards the end of the year. Against Ohio State in Week 12, he notched his first career sack. In NU's bowl game, he recorded 8 tackles and his first interception, earning him the starting SS job for his junior year. D'Attoria started the year slow, totaling just 7 tackles over the first three games, but in Week 4 against Illinois, he exploded on to the scene with 11 tackles and 3 TFLs, and in Week 12 he racked up 7 tackles, a sack, and two interceptions, earning him Big 10 defensive player of the week honors. He finished the season with 74 tackles, 11 TFLs, 8 sacks, 11 PDs, and 5 picks. Despite suspicion that he might be picked in the upcoming DSFL draft, he returned to school for his senior year in which he exploded on to the scene immediately. He switched between FS and SS with great results. He recorded 3 sacks in the first game of the season, and set a school record with 4 picks in the Week 11 game. After a Week 14 win in which D'Attoria V tallied 9 tackles with a TFL and a PD, he declared for the DSFL draft, initially projected as a high pick. He finished his senior season with 121 tackles, 10 TFLs, 6 sacks, 22 PDs, and a whopping 14 INTs.

Professional career summary

2030-2032: Career beginnings

D'Attoria V was called up to the NSFL in his rookie season, but with superstars Lennox Garnett and Bucky Barnes on the team, he was unable to earn a starting spot at the safety position. D'Attoria V played the majority of the season at the cornerback position, and in a 30-17 Week 2 win over the New Orleans Second Line, he recorded his first multi-pass deflection game, then recorded two more in the next two games. D'Attoria V's first career interception came in a 38-28 win against the Yellowknife Wraiths, and just two weeks later, he received his first ever Defensive Player of the Game honors for a 5-tackle performance with a sack and an interception in a Week 9 20-0 shutout of the San Jose Sabercats. D'Attoria V went on to win two more such awards before the conclusion of the season. In the Liberty's only playoff game, a 34-13 blowout loss to the Baltimore Hawks, D'Attoria V led the team in tackles, his first time doing so, but failed to record any other statistic. D'Attoria V finished 3rd in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting, behind Mo Berry and Leighton Lee.

Following the departure of Bucky Barnes to the Arizona Outlaws, D'Attoria V was moved to the strong safety position for his sophomore season. In a 37-24 Week 6 loss to the Outlaws, D'Attoria V recorded 9 tackles and 2 sacks en route to his first Defensive Player of the Game award for 2031, then earned another the very next week with 14 tackles and a sack in a 27-16 win over the New Orleans Second Line. D'Attoria V earned his third such honor of the season in a 34-33 Week 11 loss to the Yellowknife Wraiths. D'Attoria V's role at strong safety saw him play in the box frequently while Lennox Garnett played the free safety position. He capitalized on the role, placing third in the league in sacks with 8. He also notched 14 pass defenses, tying him for fifth among safeties with Garnett. As a result of his strong performance, D'Attoria V was selected to his first career Pro Bowl.

Entering his third season in 2032, D'Attoria V was seen as a rising star with high expectations, and his Liberty team seemed to be a team with a good mix of established veterans like Jordan von Matt and Lennox Garnett, and young talent like D'Attoria V and Emondov Emoji. Instead, the Liberty failed to establish themselves, finishing last in the NSFC and kicking off a six-season playoff drought. D'Attoria V failed to match his 2031 season. However, the season was not a complete loss. In a 21-13 Week 7 win over the Baltimore Hawks, D'Attoria V earned his first DPoG award for his 7-tackle performance with a sack.
