Although he worked harder, Season 40 turned out to be very disappointing, with the Coyotes went 4-10 after having won the Alumni just last year, and Matthew having an underwhelming season. He only had 35 tackles, one less than his rookie year, with only a single sack. However, he was able to get his first career interception, plus another one, but that wasn't enough in his eyes. He knew he was going to need to put in a lot more work and improve himself. As the playoffs began, Fryars was left sitting at home watching tape, and he wondered if he was going to be with the Coyotes for another year. He was happy to hear he had been voted into the DSFL Pro Bowl as the second Safety in the North Conference with all eight votes, and he hoped to ride it as motivation to have an even better season the following year.
