After two years of training he finally earned a starting stop his junior year. He started the season split reps at the safety position. Nelson instantly start to improve and caught the coach’s eye. Halfway through the year he earned the starting safety spot. By the end of his junior year he had becoming one of the best defense backs in the MAC. Entering his senior there were high hope for him and the defense unit. Nelson led the team in pass deflections and was a menace in the running game where he was one of the team’s top tacklers. He helped led CMU to one of their best defensive years and a bowl game. In the New Mexico Bowl Nelson came up huge with a 4th quarter interception which helped to seal the victory for CMU.  His impressive year landed him a spot on the All-MAC First Team Defense.
