Early years
Achilles Hondo was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. Hondo grew up playing basketball and football and was a three-sport athlete at Buford High School where he also was a member of the track and field team. Hondo was selected to the All-County team for football in his senior year in which Buford also won the regional championship.
College career
Early in the recruiting process, Hondo made it clear that he desired to play football at the University of Georgia, the school that both of his parents had attended. Due to academic reasons, however, Hondo was not accepted to the University of Georgia nor Georgia Tech, his top two schools. With limited options available, Hondo decided to accept a scholarship to play for Fort Valley State University in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). His freshman year ended up being a rough transition for Hondo to the college environment. He was only allowed to play half the season after being put on academic probation and nearly lost his scholarship after receiving an alcohol citation. Between his Freshman and Sophomore seasons, Hondo sought help for his off the field issues, leaning heavily on his parents and strength and conditioning coach at FVSU who had become a mentor for him during his freshman year. Between making up classes and working out during the summer, Hondo was able to turn his football and academic career around.
Hondo became a versatile weapon for FVSU starting in his Sophomore season, taking snaps as a fullback and tight end in addition to his primary role as a running back. He stayed at FVSU for four years and each season saw his performance improve. In his senior year, he led the conference in rushing yards and touchdowns with 1,533 yards and 12 touchdowns. This performance earned Hondo first team SIAC honours as well as second-team academic SIAC honours. Before the final game of his senior season, Hondo issued a statement saying that he planned to enter the NSFL after graduating.
College career statistics
Hondo left Fort Valley State with a career total of 3,189 rushing yards, 33 rushing touchdowns, 419 receiving yards and 5 receiving touchdowns.
