ISFL season 1 (also referred to as the 2016 NSFL season) began on 25 September, 2016. The season concluded with Ultimus Bowl I on 22 January, 2017, where the Arizona Outlaws were crowned ISFL champions after defeating the Colorado Yeti by a score of 6-29.

Draft

The 2016 ISFL Draft was held on 10 April, 2016. The Orange County Otters selected Defensive Lineman J. J. Reigns with the first overall pick.

Preseason

Training camps for the 2017 season started on 31 July, 2016 league-wide, with the first preseason game being held on 28 August, 2016.

Regular season

The regular season's 56 games, played over a 14-week schedule, began on 25 September, 2016.

The 2016 ISFL playoffs consisted of two rounds; with two conference championships – contested by the winner and runner up of each conference. The winners of the conference championship games then played in Ultimus Bowl I.
