Roy Rivers (born June 4, 1923) is an American football safety who is currently preparing to enter the professional ranks. He played college football for Louisiana State University (LSU) and has declared his intent to enter the professional ranks next season.

Early years

Born in New Orleans, Roy had a tough upbringing, moving from house to house. Mother Louise Rivers and dad John Rivers had to work two jobs each to make ends meet to feed their 5 children. Roy was the oldest and always the most responsible. During his early teenage years John died and Roy had a bit of a rebellious phase. His Football Coach gave him a helping hand and helped Roy use his natural athletic abilities on the football field where Roy clearly excelled. He started playing Wide Receiver, but one day tried playing in the Secondary and fell in love with the position. Tackling was so much more fun than being tackled. He found his calling, and he found it specially fun when he could figure out the pass plays and make interceptions. He ended up playing both as Wide Receiver, Free Safety and returning on Punts and Kickoffs.

College career

Roy ended up getting recruited by Louisianna State University, mostly as a developmental project, because of his raw athletic ability and intelligence on the football field. Him being a local high school supertar made the fans dream about how good he could be. Roy was recognized everywhere he went and actually had local interviews on papers and local tv. Unfortunatelly his lack of technique put him way behind his competition in the depth chart. Roy struggled to get on the field and even had public spats with the LSU Defensive Coach, who put him in the doghouse. The first two years were rough, and Roy didn't give up because his High School Coach kept in contact with him, encouraging him. After a coach overhaul in his Junior Year, Roy finally was able to get on the field as a Cornerback where he finally showcased nationally how polished he had become. Midseason, due to injuries at Free Safety, Roy was moved to that position and he became a stallwart on LSU defense.
