Emile Smith Charles (born December 1, 2034) is an American football wide receiver who is currently preparing to enter the professional ranks. He played college football for University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UH) and played for the Portland Pythons in the DSFL.

Early years

Born in Sydney, Australia, Emile was born on the 1st of December 2034 to Mackenzie and Alex Charles. Emile relocated at young age to Hawaii where he attended Kalani High School, where he played as Conerback. During his time at Kalani, Emile was convinced to convert to wideout in his sophomore year by his coach, and operated as a two-way player for a while, before completely switching in his junior year. In his junior year took the majority of snaps at wide receiver, where his speed, agility and hands served him well. Emile racked up five touchdowns and 533 receiving yards. In his senior year, Emile would split time at conerback and wide receiver, though his contributions were primarily as a returner, picking up five touchdowns from kick and punt return duties. With somewhat limited opportunities in his senior year, Emile would also pick up track and field where he was able to showcase his speed in both the 100 meter and 200 meter dash.

College career

Charles played three years for the Hawaii Rainbow Warriers, the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa football team. He appeared in all 13 games as a true freshman serving as a returner on special teams or in relief of the team's starting wide receivers. He saw limted action as a wideout with 7 catches for 102 yards and 1 touchdown. Charles was moved to a starting wide receiver role as a sophomore, after numerious departures from the team. Charles made the most of his opportunities, and would catch 41 passes for 714 yards and 9 toughdowns. In his junior season, his last in college football, Charles would be hampered by injuries to start the season, limiting his opportunities to contribute. With lingering injury issues, Charles would be eventually be moved down the depth chart and really only saw the field on special teams as a gunner and returner when he was healthy enough to see the field.

Professional career

DSFL Season 40

Drafted 36th overall in the Season 40 DSFL Draft, Emile Charles would join the Portland Pythons as a replacement for the departing Plant Based and Oliver Tolliver who were both headed to Bondi Beach Buccaneers in Season 40. Charles would join incumbent wideout Malcolm Grimes and fellow Season 40 rookie Forozka Duanei as the team's trio of wideouts to start the season. With a starting spot on offer, Charles was able to claim a starting role during training camp and while having a quiet preseason, was slated to be playing opposite of Grimes. Portland would get off to a rocky start, starting the season 1-3 before rallying to finish top of the DSFL North with a 8-6 record and go on to face the eventual champions Bondi Beach Buccaneers in Ultimini XL.

Charles would lead the league in receptions with 83 on the season while finishing 3rd in receiving yards with 1,187 while chipping in with 9 receiving touchdowns. Overall, a pretty successful rookie campaign for Charles who would also pick up a spot in the S40 DSFL Pro Bowl for the DSFL North.

ISFL Season 41

Drafted in the second round in the Season 41 ISFL Draft by the Berlin Fire Salamanders, Emile Charles received an immediate call up and was set to join Zayne Dangle and Really Creative-Name as the team's wideouts for Season 41. After training camp, Charles was listed as WR3 on the depth chart behind the established pair of Dangle and Create-Name. Berlin would get off to a slow start to the season, going 1-3 with an offense which struggled to get going. In a bid to bolster the offense and kickstart their season, Berlin would trade with New Orleans for a package that included wideout Ttollem Mada. As a result Charles found himself further down the depth chart and had limited opportunities to see the field. A stark difference from his rookie season in the DSFL, Charles would finish the season with 24 receptions, 251 receiving yards and 1 touchdown as Berlin finished with a 5-11 record.

ISFL Season 42

Charles would enter Season 42 as WR4 for the Fire Salamanders, behind Mada, Dangle and Creative-Name on the depth chart. Still playing behind 4 established veterans, Charles had limited opportunities to see the field in his second season. The majority of snaps coming in garbage time where targets were few and far between. While the lack of opportunities may be something that could have been a source of conflict, Charles took the lack of game time as motivation to improve his game and work his way up the depth chart. Charles would finish the regular season with 10 catches, 167 receiving yards and 1 touchdown as the Fire Salamanders made the Playoffs as the 3rd seed in the NSFC.

In an upset, the Fire Salamanders beat the reigning Ultimus Champions Cape Town Crash 16-13. Charles would have his most memorable play to date with a 58 yard touchdown reception to give Berlin the 13-6 lead late in the 4th quarter. After victory against the Baltimore Hawks in the Conference Championship, Berlin would face the Arizona Outlaws in Ultimus XLII. Charles would perform well in the Ultimus, with a 5 reception 83 receiving yard and 1 touchdown performance but the Fire Salamanders would fall to the Outlaws 14-38.

ISFL Season 43

After a good showing in the playoffs, Charles would head into his 3rd season as the team's WR3 while also serving as the Fire Salamanders Punt Returner. It didn't take long to for Charles to surpass his previous season high in receiving yards as he would finish the season with 51 catches, 684 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns. His best game would be in Week 7 against the Sarasota Sailfish where Charles would make 7 catches for 131 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns. With a record of 8-8, the Fire Salamanders would miss the playoffs on a tiebreaker.

While this would prove to be his best season in the ISFL, Charles career to date has largely been underwhelming. Despite this, Berlin would offer Charles a 1 year extension prior to the end of the season. Putting pen to paper, Charles heads into his 4th season with much to prove as he looks to finally establish himself in the Fire Salamanders passing game.

ISFL Season 44

With the departure of quarterback Roque Santa Cruz and the signing of Adrian St. Christmas and phasing out of stalwart wideout Zayne Dangle, Season 44 was a new chapter of sorts for Berlin. In addition to picking up a larger role on offense, Charles would also serve as one of the team's kick returners for the season. With a new quarterback at the helm, Berlin would start the season slow and drop their opening two games, losing narrowly on both occasions. Berlin would soon bounce back and win their next two games with Charles getting more involved in the passing game. In what would be an up and down season, Berlin would hover around the .500 mark for the majority of the season before finishing with an 8-8 record, missing the playoffs for a second straight season.

While this was ultimately a frustrating season, it did mark another jump in performance for Charles who finished with 999 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns on the season. Additionally, Charles would earn a Pro Bowl spot in the NSFC on Special Teams, having performed well as a returner for the Fire Salamanders. After a step up in production, Charles would be handed an extension by Berlin to lock him down long term. As star wideout Sconnie McSix bids farewell to the game, the door is firmly open for Charles to repay the faith and step up as a playmaker next season.

ISFL Season 45

With the departures of Sconnie McSix and Zayne Dangle, Emile was slated for more opportunities in Season 45. This would mark the first season that Emile would break 1,000 receiving yards on route to leading the team in receiving touchdowns with 10. Spending time on the outside, playing in the slot and as a tight end during the season, Emile showcased his versatility as part of an offense which leaned heavily on the passing game. With his duties on special teams continuing, Emile was a solid returner and racked up 1,067 return yards. Although disappointingly, this would be his second consecutive season without a touchdown on special teams.

Part of a quartet of players to finish with more than 1,000 receiving yards, Berlin would miss out on the playoffs on a tiebreaker. A strong close to the season to finish 9-7 would not be enough for Berlin to overcome an untimely midseason slump which saw them once again on the outside looking in.

ISFL Season 46

Safe to say that Berlin were entering a transition period as veterans entered the twilight of their careers. This was not the case for Charles who had his best receiving season to date. Racking up 1,359 receiving yards (3rd most in the league) and 13 receiving touchdowns which was the most receiving touchdowns by a player in Season 46. After coming out of the gates 3-3, the season would fall away quickly for Berlin. Veteran quarterback Adrian St. Christmas was traded with Nova Montagne joining Berlin as the team's quarterback for the remaining 8 games. While Montagne and Charles were able to get on the same page rather quickly, the team would finish the season going 2-6, putting them well out of the playoff picture. A career season in which Charles looks to have proved himself as a primary receiver overshadowed by what was the rather disappointing season for the Fire Salamanders.
