Axel Hornbacher (born January 7, 2005) is an American football safety for the Portland Pythons of the Developmental Simulation Football League (DSFL). He played college football for University of Colorado (University of Colorado) before being drafted by the Portland Pythons in the S11 DSFL Draft.

Early years

Axel Hornbacher was born in Sante Fe, New Mexico to Trevor and Angela Hornbacher. His father was an assistant coach for the Portland Pythons under Rashaad Brooks in S3 - S6 before moving back to coach high school football in New Mexico. Trevor played a pivotal role in revamping the Pythons franchise.

Hornbacher played for the Manzano Monarchs as their starting safety and kick returner all 4 years of high school. He played as a slot receiver on occasion as well demonstrating the ability to be an efficienty two-way player for a the latter half of his high school career. In his senior year, he set New Mexico high school football records with ten interceptions and 8 touchdowns from returns. He was considered one of the fastest high school players in the nation before entering the S11 DSFL draft. His father was the head coach of the team starting in Axel's junior year. The two share a close relationship through football and his father plays a large role in his training, diet, and general life decisions. With Trevor's football connections, we was able to convince the University of Colorado to scout and offer Axel an opportunity to play for the university.

College career

Hornbacher accepted a full ride scholarship to the University of Colorado and was an immediate impact player as a true freshman in 2023. He started all 14 games recording 86 tackles, two interceptions, and four sacks. Following his freshman campaign, Hornbacher was named Freshman All American by USA Today. In his sophomore year, he started all 14 games again and was named All Pac-12 after recording 80 tackles, one interception, and two sacks. His junior year saw consistent growth of play where he recorded 83 tackles, three interceptions, and six sacks playing as a nickleback and free safety. After earning consensus All-American honors again by multiple media outlets and associations, Hornbacher felt it was time to move up to the next level sooner rather than later in his college career. On January 5th, 2025, he announced his decision to forego his senior season to enter the S11 DSFL Draft.
