Early Years
American Dream was born Allyn Marcus to parents George and Javonna Marcus in New Haven, Connecticut. New Haven has some beautiful parts including Yale University, the Yale Reperatory Theater, and the central Town Green. Dream was not born in that part of New Haven. It's not widely known outside the state, but New Haven is one of the 10 poorest cities in America. It is in that part of New Haven that Dream was born and raised. He went to James Hillhouse High School where he was an average student and a brilliant athlete. His brilliance looked to be his ticket out of the cycle of poverty he was born into and he worked hard enough to earn a scholarship to multiple state schools, but Dream chose to stay closer to home and attend the University of Connecticut. His more challenging background and love of football are what eventually made Allyn Marcus want to legally change his name to American Dream. He wanted to be on the field what the American Dream is in reality - sought after by many, but difficult to catch and pin down.
College Career
Not to disparage the University of Connecticut, but it is not the powerhouse that USC, Alabama, or Penn State have been in their respective histories. Dream chose to commit to UCONN partly for this very reason. He wanted to be a bigger fish in a smaller pond than a smaller fish in a larger one. In short, Dream wanted to be the starting running back and he wanted that from his freshman year. Dream got his wish starting all four of his college seasons as the premier running back of an improving Huskie offense. Once the college recruited some superior o-line prospects, Dream's numbers really shot up and in his senior year the Huskies had climbed out of their sub .500 performances of the past and had built a solid foundation for the future.
