Sledge grew up loving the sport of football and crew up an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and spent much of his time watching or playing the sport. usually to the detriment of the players he was playing against who were usually much smaller than Sledge. Sledge and his brother Jack would end up dominating the high school football scene in Texas but unfortunately weren't on a good team throughout their four years in high school and failed to make the playoffs inspite of putting up monster numbers as a four year starter for Richardson High School varsity team. In his final season at the school, the team would go on to lose every game that season even though Sledge would end up setting the school record for sacks and tackles for loss over a career. Despite putting up monster numbers and being an absolutely intimidating human being based on hi size and speed Sledge wasn't a highly recruited player coming out of high school. The only instate school that offered him a scholarship was the University of North Texas. Upon finding out that his brother Jack also got a scholarship from North Texas both players decided to stick together and both accepted scholarships from the University of North Texas to continue their football careers.
