Richard Gilbert (born December 5, 1995) is an American football runningback for the Tijuana Luchadores of the Developmental Simulation Football League (DSFL).

Early years

"Born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan to parents James (an accountant) and Heather (a nurse) Gilbert. Richard began his football career at age 10 while in fourth grade, however he was limited to flag football only. Upon graduating from middle school to high school, Richard Gilbert made the switch to contact football.

While the switch from flags to pads was a bit of a learning curve which caused him to have a slow start during his freshman year, Richard learned to utilize his unique combination of size and speed to run through his opponents. Richard was promoted to varsity his sophomore year after an early season ending injury to the previous starting back, and saw some limited use as a short yardage back. During his Junior and Senior years, he was utilized heavily as the lead runningback, and led the state in both rushing yards and touchdowns, while simultaneously setting school records."

College career

"As a freshman at Michigan State, Gilbert was used sparingly as a change of pace and for goal line situations. Similar to the transition to contact football in high school, he struggled a bit at first getting used to the speed of the higher level game. Nevertheless, while Gilbert only averaged just over 3 touches per game in his first year, he managed to make the most of his opportunities and racked up 7 rushing touchdowns and one receiving.

Richard's usage increased his sophomore year, with him earning his way to a more even share of the carries thanks to his prior success. He managed to break a thousand yards and scored 14 touchdowns, including a 72 yard game winner to put the Spartans on top of the rival Wolverines in the Big Ten conference championship.

During his junior year, Gilbert saw the lion's share of the carries as his former teammate left for the draft. He took full advantage of the opportunity, and fought his way to a record breaking year. Totalling just under 2,000 yards and 22 touchdowns, Gilbert came in as the Heisman runner-up.

Richard Gilbert made the controversial decision to stay for his senior year for one last shot at the Heisman before entering the draft. The decision turned out to be a poor one, as he suffered a major ACL tear after just the third game of the season, ending his college career and causing his promising draft stock to plummet."

S21

"Gilbert was drafted as the last pick of the 12th round in the S21 DSFL draft. He saw significant usage as a change of pace back for the speedier second year running back, Ed Barker. While Gilbert's share of the carries was just under half, he made the most again of his touches. Gilbert fell just outside the top 10 runningbacks in terms of rushing yards, but ended in a 3 way tie for second in the league with 10 rushing touchdowns. Furthermore, Gilbert was the first of the 3 players to reach 10 touchdowns. On top his rushing accolades, Gilbert was able to contribute in the passing game when given the opportunity. Over the course of the season, he caught 13 catches for 98 yards, and led all DSFL running backs in pancakes with 15. After a promising rookie season in the DSFL, Richard Gilbert looks to improve upon his stats in the coming season, with veteran running back Ed Barker a likely candidate to be brought up to the NSFL for Season 22.

Going into the NSFL draft, Richard Gilbert was considered one of the top 5 running back prospects in the class. His combination of speed and strength made him an interesting prospect for scouts. While he likely would never be one of the fastest running backs in the league, he proved in his first year in the DSFL that he was motivated and always working hard to get better. This, along with his easy going demeanor helped him to attract attention as a potential future feature back after spending some more time developing his skills."

S22

"After declaring for the S22 NSFL draft, Richard Gilbert ended up being drafted 76th overall to the Colorado Yeti. Gilbert was drafted as the running back of the future for the team, and was sent down to the DSFL for another season as the Yeti backfield was made up of seasoned veterans Ashley Owens and Michael Vincent.

Gilbert rejoined the Tijuana Luchadores offense with fellow class of S22 send downs Ben Slothlisberger at quarterback and Friedrich Vequain at wide receiver. With former teammate Ed Barker called up to the NSFL to play for the New Orleans Second Line, Gilbert was poised to lead the Tijuana rushing attack, eventually being supplemented by the aptly named Running Back.

The duo proved to be extremely effective throughout the season, with both rushers cracking the top 10 in the league in rushing yards. In addition, Running Back led the league with 11 rushing touchdowns, while Gilbert trailed him by only 1 touchdown. While Gilbert’s efficiency went down from his S21 numbers, his volume vastly increased, totalling over 1300 yards on the ground, compared to just under 1,000 in the prior season. In addition, Gilbert recorded his first career receiving touchdowns in the week 3 victory over the Myrtle Beach Buccaneers. The season capped for the Luchadores defeating the London Royals for their 7th Ultimini, a game in which Richard Gilbert scored the sole touchdown between either team.

While awards season did not see Gilbert coming home as the winner of any individual awards, he was nominated both for Running Back of the Year as well as for Offensive Performance of the year in the previously mentioned week 3 win against Myrtle Beach."
