Paul Edgecomb (born December 6, 1891) is an American football safety for the New Orleans Second Line of the International Simulation Football League (ISFL).

Early years

Paul Edgecomb was born in in Tallulah, Louisiana on December 6th, 1935 to Stephen and Bonnie Edgecomb. Stephen owned and operated a well respected general store in town while Bonnie raised Paul and ran the house.

He attended Madison High School where he played quarterback and safety for the team. He was known to be a tough tackler and skilled at reading both opposing offences and defenses. In that era, there was little use of the forward pass, but when called upon, Edgecomb was known to have a cannon of an arm. The majority of the time, however, it was more about tough, grinding running on offence and delivery bone crushing hits on defense. Edgecomb's team was fairy successful, winning one championship in his four year tenure with the team. He spent the final two years as captain. Statistics were not measured the same way at the time, but many have speculated that Edgecomb led the team in tackles made in both of those seasons.

College career

After graduating high school, Edgecomb worked as a laborer for a while prior to World War I. He served in the US Military from May of 1917 until the armistice was declared. After returning home to Tallulah, he gained employment as a prison guard at Cold Mountain Penitentiary.

Edgecomb held this position through most of the Great Depression before resigning in 1935. During his time as a guard and before becoming Commanding Officer of the death row cellblock, he and fellow guard Brutus "Brutal" Howell started a football league at the prison. Edgecomb resumed his former positions as quarterback and safety of his team, while Howell played linebacker and tight end for his. While the league had only two teams, the rivalry between the teams was fierce. Edgecomb's team won the championship 7 times to Howell's 6 during the league's 13 year tenure.

Following his retirement from Cold Mountain Penitentiary, Edgecomb has led a long life. He survives his wife Jan and his son Paul. It is unknown why after 90 years of retiring from football Edgecomb has elected to enter the draft, however those that have heard stories of his time in the prison are very excited to see what is in store.

DSFL

2059 (S44)

Paul Edgecomb was drafted to the London Royals with the second overall pick in the 2059 DSFL draft. His rookie year was an up and down season on the field. London finished the season 4-10 and at bottom of the DSFL, with the defense allowing the most points in the North and the second most in the league. Statistically the defense played well, with the most TFLs and third most sacks, but were unable to consistently stop opposing offences. Edgecomb was a factor in the turnover game, ending the season with 2 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles, and a joint league leading 3 fumble recoveries. He looks to build on that momentum and generate many more turnovers for London in the coming season. He flashed his versatility primarily playing at cornerback for the Royals in 2059, and will hope to lock down opposing receivers and be a more consistent presence in the run defense in what will hopefully turn into an Ultimini run.

2060 (S45)

Following his rookie season with the London Royals, Paul Edgecomb was drafted higher than anticipated. Taken with the second overall pick, there are lofty expectations for his progress from his new ISFL team, New Orleans Second Line. However, as is fairly commonplace, Edgecomb wouldn't join his new team for the league's 45th season and would return to the London Royals, hoping to improve on a season filled with disappointments. Sadly, Edgecomb's sophomore season was similar to his rookie one, with London winning 4 games and finishing at the bottom of the North. The offence was much improved from the prior season, leading the DSFL North in points for and the DSFL in passing yards. Unfortunately, it was Edgecomb and the defence who would let the team down. The Royals' defence would allow 403 points against across the year, one of only two teams to allow 400 points or more on the season. Edgecomb was able to amass 5 interceptions, tied third in the league, and 18 PDs, putting him sixth in the DSFL for that statistic. Paul was put in charge of kick return duties this year and showed up, leading the DSFL in kick return yards, as well as maintaining the highest kick return average for all players with more than 10 returns. The individual statistics mean little to Edgecomb, who is still searching for the first playoff berth of his career. He will move from London to New Orleans for next season and will aim to be part of an up and coming secondary along with fellow rookie Dawelle Wevis.

ISFL

2061 (S46)

After spending a second season with the London Royals, Paul Edgecomb was called up to join his ISFL team, the New Orleans Second Line. Like the past two seasons with London, his ISFL rookie season would prove disappointing from a team success point of view. The season began about as bad as it could, with the Second Line losing all 6 of their opening 6 games. Following a mid season trade which saw New Orleans acquire two top tier players, there seemed to be hope as the team won 4 games on the bounce. This hope would not last long, however, as the team would go on to lose another six consecutive games once that streak ended.

Edgecomb himself started the season at nickel back, and had a seeming breakout game in week 3 against the Silverbacks, where, despite a loss, Edgecomb would record 5 tackles, his first career sack, 2 PDs, and his first career interception. Following the trade that saw safety Inspector Gadget leave the team and cornerback Billy Jor-El join, Edgecomb moved back and began his career as a true safety. The win streak that started after these moves were made is exactly what both Paul and the team have been hoping for, and they hope to make some serious noise in 2062.
