Early years

Mary Marie IV was born in San Fransisco, to SFSU professor of music Mary Marie III and feminist journalist and critic Alice Hammerson. Marie IV has described her upbringing as 'fairly tumultuous', as her parents filed for divorce when she was eight years old. She played found success playing football in high school. In her Junior year, Marie recorded eight pass breakups, an interception, forced four fumbles and recovered two, in addition to 105 tackles, 80 solo. In her senior year she took a step forward, recording ten pass breakups, six interceptions, three forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries, and a sack, as well as 98 tackles, 81 solo. She also played well on special teams, blocking two punts and one kick during the season. Marie was considered a two-star recruit entering her senior year, but she opted to instead leave the country and go to Edinburgh to pursue a degree in history.

College career

While Marie did not go to university with the intention of playing football, she nonetheless signed up to join Edinburgh's new gridiron football team in its inaugural year. She immediately stood out on the team, and lead her team in pass breakups, interceptions, and tackles every year she played. Although Edinburgh suffered a 6-33-1 record during the four years Marie played there, her individual performances stood out greatly in the Scottish Gridiron Football University League, where she won the Defensive Player of the Year award in both her junior and senior seasons. During her four year college career, she tallied 443 tackles—397 solo—21 interceptions, 37 pass breakups, seven sacks, 14 forced fumbles and ten fumble recoveries. She also blocked four punts, and recovered one blocked punt. She scored nine touchdowns, five from interception returns, three from fumble returns, and one on a blocked punt. She holds the SGFUL record for most interceptions in a single game at four, a record she obtained in her senior year in a game against Glasgow to break Edinburgh's multi-year losing streak. She graduated with a 2:1 degree in history after declaring for the DSFL S40 draft.
