Mary Marie (born August 29, 2033) is an American football safety who is currently preparing to enter the professional ranks. She played college football for University of Edinburgh (UoE) before entering the 2055 DSFL Draft (S40). She was drafted first overall to the Bondi Beach Buccaneers, where highly successful play would lead her to be drafted second overall in the 2056 ISFL Draft (S41) to the Colorado Yeti. She is known for being fairly light-hearted and laid back, and her inconsistent play on the field is often said to be reflective of her personality.

Early years

Mary Marie IV was born in San Francisco, to SFSU professor of music Mary Marie III and feminist journalist and critic Alice Hammerson. Marie IV has described her upbringing as 'fairly tumultuous', as her parents filed for divorce when she was eight years old. She played found success playing football in high school. In her Junior year, Marie recorded eight pass breakups, an interception, forced four fumbles and recovered two, in addition to 105 tackles, 80 solo. In her senior year she took a step forward, recording ten pass breakups, six interceptions, three forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries, and a sack, as well as 98 tackles, 81 solo. She also played well on special teams, blocking two punts and one kick during the season. Marie was considered a two-star recruit entering her senior year, but she opted to instead leave the country and go to Edinburgh to pursue a degree in history.

College career

While Marie did not go to university with the intention of playing football, she nonetheless signed up to join Edinburgh's new gridiron football team in its inaugural year. She immediately stood out on the team, and lead her team in pass breakups, interceptions, and tackles every year she played. Although Edinburgh suffered a 6-41-1 record during the four years Marie played there, her individual performances stood out greatly in the Scottish Gridiron Football University League, where she won the Defensive Player of the Year award in both her junior and senior seasons. During her four year college career, she tallied 443 tackles—397 solo—21 interceptions, 37 pass breakups, seven sacks, 14 forced fumbles and ten fumble recoveries. She also blocked four punts, and recovered one blocked punt. She scored nine touchdowns, five from interception returns, three from fumble returns, and one on a blocked punt. She holds the SGFUL record for most interceptions in a single game at four, a record she obtained in her senior year in a game against Glasgow to break Edinburgh's multi-year losing streak. She graduated with a 2:1 degree in history after declaring for the DSFL S40 draft.

2055 Season — Incredible Success

After being drafted first overall in the DSFL S40 draft by the Bondi Beach Buccaneers, Mary Marie began an impressive rookie campaign. The Buccaneers, expecting to rebuild for the season, were not surprised to lose their first two games in close battles, but Mary had immediately put herself on the map with an interception in each game, along with a sack from the free safety position against the Dallas Birddogs. A forced fumble and recovery by Marie in week 3 against the Portland Pythons sealed an upset victory for Bondi Beach's first win of the season. They would shock the league from there, immediately winning 5 in a row to put themselves atop the standings. In week 13 she would pick off rookie QB Lloyd Bannings twice, with one returned for a touchdown, in a game against the Luchadores that would eventually secure a DSFL Individual Performance of the Year award. In the playoffs, Mary Marie was fairly quiet, making only 9 tackles, but nevertheless the Buccaneers defeated the Pythons in a 24-21 comeback victory from 21-3 in the Ultimus to finish off a surprise season. Marie herself was a key contributor to the team, and was selected for an All Pro position as well as a Defensive Player of the Year award. In the 2056 Draft (S41) draft, she was selected second overall to the Colorado Yeti, but would remain with the Buccaneers for another season before being called up.

2056 Season — Horrible Downfall

In her second year in Bondi Beach, Marie took a huge step back in her play after struggling with a series of off-the-field issues. Unable to handle the pressure of the expectations set on her for the previous year, she began a series of off-day escapades that would frequently land her in serious trouble, and she didn't keep up with the training regimen that earned her great success in the previous season. Because of this, she struggled with her switch to strong safety and failed to produce on the field throughout a tumultuous season in Bondi Beach. The team as a whole would prove to be heavily streaky, starting 0-5 before winning 4 in a row and re-entering the race for the wild card. The team would stumble late in the season but would nevertheless secure a playoff spot. They would, however, lose to the Tijuana Luchadores in a game in which Mary Marie secured 8 tackles and defended a pass. This would be her last game as a Buccaneers, and she would leave to join the Colorado Yeti for the 2057 season.

2057 Season — Start of a Rebuild

Despite her struggles in the previous season, the precarious situation in Colorado meant that Marie would see the field in red and white sooner than expected. In a sudden change of leadership, Colorado would see their long-time franchise QB Live Laugh Love retire, and they would quickly move towards a full rebuild, trading their star RB Ceti Pyxis. Notably they would trade their strong safety Inspector Gadget, thus opening a spot for the still young Marie. She would perform admirably nevertheless, and the team would overperform a little bit, finishing the season 6-10 despite firmly entering a rebuild. Notably, Mary Marie was all over the field for the Yeti, and while she wouldn't make a large amount of flashy plays, she reached the 100-tackle mark, nearly leading ISFL safeties in tackles and leading ISFL rookies in tackles despite not being a linebacker. She would be nominated for defensive rookie of the year for her play.

2058 Season — Ending the Drought

Marie's 2058 would see her take an excellent step forwards, and in her sophomore season, she would begin to stand out, especially as one of the premier blitzing safeties in the league, racking up 8 quarterback sacks over the course of the season. Off the field, Marie became known for her many antics and pranks, which were often considered benign by the media. One exception was a prank in which Marie swapped the red Yeti practice jerseys for yellow jerseys, claiming that "yellow is the true Yeti color". However, many pundits claimed that Wolfie McDummy's poor performance against Baltimore in the following week, in which he threw for 3 interceptions in a miserable 41-7 loss for the Yeti, was due to his confusion as to the true color of the Yeti jerseys, and Marie was often to blame for this confusion. Nevertheless, the team would turn things around, winning 4 games in a row late in the season and remaining in contention for a wildcard spot in the NFSC. They would make the playoffs by the slimmest of margins, beating the Berlin Fire Salamanders for the 3-seed on tiebreakers, and ending the team's 11 year playoff drought, and preventing them from taking the all-time record for the longest playoff drought. Despite losing in the playoffs, it was a wildly successful season for the Yeti, and Marie's individual performance would earn her votes for 2nd Team All Pro.

2059 Season — Season from Hell

In 2059, everything would fall apart, both for the Yeti and for Marie individually. The team would turn the ball over extremely often, and the defense would suffer extreme futility and almost never generate any turnovers. Particularly of note was McDummy's 24 interceptions in an awful year for him. In the early season, Marie would pull many pranks on the dog QB, mostly involving switching the jerseys in practice with those of their upcoming opponent's—causing the confused quarterback to throw multiple interceptions in practice. These pranks would come to a stop when McDummy's interceptions began to get sorely out of hand. Marie, for her own part, would also regress, recording a career low in tackles, interceptions, forced fumbles, fumbles recovered, passes defended, and sacks. She participated in no turnovers, forcing only one fumble, which was recovered by the offense, and recording zero interceptions. Thankfully, the team maintained a positive attitude and tried to put an emphasis on week to week improvement. A week 15 thrashing of the Berlin Fire Salamanders on the road would hopefully be a sign of good things to come from a lost season.

2060 Season — Suffocating Defense

In 2060, Marie and the Yeti saw a massive turnaround on defense. The acquisition of star free agent Donte Darius from the New York Silverbacks invigorated the team, and Yeti draftee Waylen Greene saw a breakout year after moving from inside linebacker and nickel corner to outside linebacker. Marie herself saw a massive improvement, especially in coverage. She recorded a career high 12 pass breakups, and she tied her career record with 2 interceptions and a defensive touchdown. She also forced a career high three fumbles and recovered one. 2060 also saw Marie score her first career safety, and was overall an excellent bounce back year for the now-veteran safety. All in all, Colorado's defense rose to among the best in the league, almost certainly the best in the NSFC, and they rode the defense to the NSFC number 1 overall seed despite a broadly disappointing season from the Colorado offense behind one of the worst offensive lines in the league after losing their star left tackle, Remi-Musgrave Smythe. They would lose in the NSFC Championship Game, however, extending their playoff win drought to at least 15 seasons. Nevertheless, it was a promising season for the team.
