Because he had both size and speed, Gronku chose to play Tight End, despite having no experience at that position. He caught one pass in that game and then only suited up sporadically after that, finally scoring his first touchdown late in his third season. He graduated after his 4th season, earning a Bacehlor's degree in Economics. Praised by his coaches for his team-first attitude and work ethic, he nonetheless was not drafted into the NFL. He had secured a tryout with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League, but due to covid concerns, that league was shut down for the season.
