His redshirt freshman year, he made the playing roster, however he was third string on the depth chart and did not see the field. Donny credits these two years for much of his later success, as these were the first two years in his life that football had been his priority. It was during his redshirt yeah that he met his best friend, Sherwin Blue Jr., who was on a medical redshirt for an ankle injury of dubious severity. In Donovan's redshirt sophomore year, He was the backup QB, however a late season injury to the starter allowed Donovan to start the last three games of the season. Donovan had a quiet start to the season, but once the Pythons acquired undrafted rookie WR Plant Based from the waiver wire, Donovan and the Pythons showed what they were capable of, finishing the last five games of the season with a 4-1 record, with the only loss being a close one point game to the Tijuana Luchadores.
