Early years
Chance Matthews was born in Portland, Oregon to Thomas and Marie Matthews. He lived within proximity to Portland State University and his early love of football came from being able to catch games there as a child. Chance would spend any extra money he had on NFL cards and imagined himself in their shoes. He joined a youth league as soon as he was able to and found an affinity for the defensive end of the field. He tried out for the Franklin High School Quakers his freshman year and after a year in the junior varsity as a linebacker the varsity coach identified that he was more suited for the safety role and from his sophomore year on he was a monster in the safety role for the varsity team, frequently grabbing interceptions and breaking up plays.
College career
Matthews was recruited to the University of Oregon after an impressive senior year campaign in which he recorded six interceptions. He was behind two other more experienced safeties with the Ducks, but with an unfortunate injury opening up the spot Matthews was given his time in the sun. He was shaky at first, but in his third college start he was able to break up what would be a game winning touchdown pass not once, but twice against Oregon rival Oregon State University, sealing the win for his Ducks with his defensive effort.
