Chance "The Viking" Matthews (born January 19, 2000) is an American football safety who is currently playing for the Portland Pythons.

Early years

Chance Matthews was born in Portland, Oregon to Thomas and Marie Matthews. He lived within proximity to Portland State University and his early love of football came from being able to catch games there as a child. Chance would spend any extra money he had on NFL cards and imagined himself in their shoes. He joined a youth league as soon as he was able to and found an affinity for the defensive end of the field. He tried out for the Franklin High School Quakers his freshman year and after a year in the junior varsity as a linebacker the varsity coach identified that he was more suited for the safety role and from his sophomore year on he was a monster in the safety role for the varsity team, frequently grabbing interceptions and breaking up plays.

College career

Matthews was recruited to the University of Oregon after an impressive senior year campaign in which he recorded six interceptions. Matthews called the decision to sign with the local college an easy one and there was a lot of excitement from his family and from the college about his arrival there.

Matthews didn't get much playing time his freshman year with him being behind two older and more experienced safeties. He only played two games that season and didn't record any substantial stats. He reflected on this year as a disappointment in the offseason and didn't believe that his level of play met the standards he set for himself.

Between his freshman and sophomore years Matthews spent a lot more time in the weight room and watching film on both his plays from the season prior and players he liked to model his game after, namely Kam Chancellor. Unfortunately for Matthews he was busted for using performance enhancing drugs after a random drug test and was suspended from all athletics for the next season.

After a tumultuous offseason where he was almost dropped from the team due to his past indiscretions he was ultimately allowed to return to play for Oregon and with the two safeties ahead of him in the depth chart having left for the draft he got the starting nod and played all 13 games that season. He recorded 2 interceptions and 72 combined tackles his junior year season with his second interception sealing the win against Ducks rival Oregon State University in the waning seconds of the civil war game.

Matthews' senior year started out with a bang. He got an interception and returned it for a touchdown in the first game of the season. Unfortunately during the third game of the year Matthews landed awkwardly after a tackle and was forced to sit out the rest of the season with an ankle injury.
