Early years
Porpoise is known as a gentle giant, and only started playing football as a junior at Wake Forest High School. He was more stubby than massive as a freshman and sophomore, but a summer growth spurt made him difficult to miss and quickly earned him the attention of the football team's coaching staff. A natural athlete in spite of his size, Porpoise racked up 28 sacks, 204 tackles, 6 forced fumbles, and 1 interception in his two years as a starter. His 18 sacks as a junior set a North Carolina record for interior linemen. He began his senior year as a 3-star recruit ranked in the low three-hundreds, but by the time he graduated, Porpoise was a consensus five-star prospect with offers from most major ACC and SEC programs, including Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Tennessee, and Virginia Tech. Although he held offers from more prestigious programs, he ultimately signed with Clemson for their marine biology program.
College career
As a freshman at Clemson University, Porpoise played in all 12 regular season games as part of a fearsome defensive line group for the Tigers, contributing 6.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss. His performance helped lift the Tigers to an ACC Championship and College Football Playoff appearance, though they fell to the Michigan Wolverines in the first round of the latter. His freshman year performance was enough to earn him ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year and Freshman All-American honors. Porpoise was named a pre-season All-American as a sophomore, but battled nagging injuries that ultimately held him out of several games. He managed just 33 total tackles, 3 sacks, and 5 tackles for loss, but saved his best for last as a one-man wrecking crew in a National Championship game that saw Clemson defeat Auburn 24-7. It was a forgone conclusion that Porpoise would enter the draft following his junior year, but his final campaign did not disappoint as he had his best collegiate season as a pass rusher with 8.5 sacks and 22 pressures. Clemson missed the playoff entirely after losing two regular season games and dropping a third to Southern Methodist in the ACC Championship, leading Porpoise to opt out of the team's bowl game to prepare for the DSFL Draft.
