College career
As a true Freshman, Max only had 6 carries for a total of 35 yards and a reception for -1 yards. After a season-ending injury to the backup Running Back, Vaz found himself #2 on the depth chart going into his Sophomore season. His breakout game was against Big-12 rival Baylor where he had 18 carries for 149 yards and 2 TDs. He wouldn't rush for more than 100 yards again for the remainder of the season. Going into his Junior season, he was promoted to the starting role after the previous incumbent graduated. In a game against West Virginia, Vaz made school history by being the first Red Raider to score two touchdowns by rushing, receiving, and returning totaling 6 touchdowns for the game. Texas Tech went on to lose that game 62-52. Vaz finished the year 4th in Heisman voting and won 1st Team All-Big 12.
In 2028, Vaz was on the Heisman and Doak Walker watchlist to begin the season. In the second game of the season against UCLA, Vaz made national headlines after scoring a 69-yard rushing touchdown on a designed wildcat play that members of the media called "The Touchdown of the Year". It involved 4 laterals, which ended with Vaz scoring a touchdown to end the first half. However, the show was stolen when UCLA starting Quarterback Apollo Lange hurdled over two Texas Tech defenders at once to dive into the endzone at the buzzer. Texas Tech lost 21-52. Max Vaz declared for the draft a week before the WikiLeaks: 2 Bowl which Texas Tech would lose 14-28.
