Early years
Erik Okeli Gaare was born on October 28, 2020 in Alesund, Norway to Ernst Jonas Gaare, a Norwegian fisherman and Amaka Ndulu, a Nigerian immigrant. He has two younger brothers, Tony and Obike. His father descended from a traditional fishing family and growing up that was the expectation for Erik’s future as well. He movied to the Boulder, CO when he was 6 years old due to undisclosed legal problems his father had with Norwegian authorities. He started playing various american sports as he grew up, having played Baseball and Basketball in elementary school. He went on the become the starting QB, CB and K of his High School in Boulder as a sophomore and became a 3-star rated prospect and the top dual threat QB in the state. He received scolarship offers from 5 different schools but decided to remain close to home and commited to the University of Colorado to play QB.
College career
Erik started his career at CU as the fourth string QB and did not see any playing time. He competed for the starting job entering his sophomore season but ended up being the third stringer and had few appearances during the year. Entering his Junior year, CU changed Head Coaches and the new coach would not commit to giving him any playing time as a QB. Erik decided to fight for his job and not transfer to another school. He started the year as the backup QB but eventually found himself starting after a disappointing 1-3 start to the campaign. He started 9 games, including the Bowl game against Oklahoma State and had a record of 8-1. He quickly became one of the most loved players on the roster and decided to come back his Senior year to build on the success he had as a Junior. Erik finished his Senior year with a disappointing 6-7 record, including a Bowl loss. He set the record for most rushing yards by a CU Quarterback in his career.
