Duke Silverback (born June 5, 2039) is an American football Fullback and Linebacker for the Minnesota Grey Ducks. He played college football for New York University (NYU) before going undrafted in the 2064 ISFL Draft (S49). He is also the leader of The Duke Silverback Trio, and he performs at Cozy's Bar in Eagleton, Indiana, on the second Thursday of every month.

Early years

Duke was born in New York, the youngest of eight children, and first to be born in a hospital. He was a very large baby, weighing 13 pounds 6 ounces (6.1 kg) at birth. His father John, a Lithuanian immigrant to Ellis Island who spoke broken English, was an electrician and worked for the Pullman-Standard railroad car manufacturing company. His mother, Emma, worked 50 hours a week at a laundry. Duke grew up in the Roseland neighborhood on Chicago's South Side. He was a fan of the New York Silverbacks of the International Simulation Football League (ISFL) and attended their games at The Concrete Jungle. His older brother Ron played football for three colleges and tried out for the Silverbacks before quitting due to a bad knee. For four years starting at age 15, Duke worked with his four brothers as a mover.

Duke began his football career at Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, New York. He was the starting Fullback and Defensive Tackle on the 2058 Dutchmen football team that won the NY PSAL State Tournament Championship under coach Scooter McNutty. He averaged five yards per carry as a Fullback, but preferred playing Defensive Tackle, where he made 70 percent of his team's tackles. In Duke's first year on the varsity team, Erasmus Hall surrendered only 55 points in eight games. In 2058, he was the first junior to be honored by the New York Post as New York's high school player of the year. Injuries limited his play as a senior, but he was still heavily recruited by colleges to play football.

College career

Duke chose to attend New York University, and played Center, Fullback, and Defensive Tackle from 2060 through 2062. He initially wanted to play for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, however the team frowned upon married players at the time. In his first year on the team, he was named to the 2060 Independent Conference football team as the third-team Center by the Simulation Football Writers Guild (ISWG) and second-team Defensive Tackle by Weekly Mirror International (WMI). In 2061, NYU compiled an 10–1–1 record and defeated Washington in the 2061 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Duke was named the team's most valuable player for the season, and was awarded the New York Post Silver Football as the Team's most valuable player. He was a unanimous choice as a Defensive Tackle for the 2061 and 2062 College Football All-America Team, earning first-team honors from all seven major selectors.

According to statistics kept by the university, in his three seasons at NYU, Duke accumulated 97 Tackles, 20 Sacks, 43 Pancakes, 204 Rushing Yards, and 2 Rushing Touchdowns. Following Duke's dominance on Defense in his Junior year, Sportswriter Zenzeroni Xystarch remarked "If every college football team had a player like Duke Silverback of NYU, all fullbacks, soon would be three feet tall and sing soprano."

Rookie Season and Draft

Duke was selected in the third round of the S48 DSFL draft, taken by the Minnesota Grey Ducks, he went on to be a key player for Minnesota playing primarily as a Fullback, and some limited snaps defensively at Linebacker. Duke was able to excel as a true rookie totaling 1000 all purpose yards and helping the Grey Ducks make their way to an Ultimini appearance where team suffered a 10-20 loss to the Tijuana Luchadores. Following the conclusion of the DSLF season, Duke was subsequently drafted in the second round of the S49 ISFL draft by the New York Silverbacks of the American Simulation Football Conference along with fellow future Hall of Famer Kevin Finnerty (second overall), Butkus was one of four picks for the Silverbacks in that ISFL draft. The pick they used for Duke had been acquired in a trade with the Arizona Outlaws. The Silverbacks decision to draft Duke was viewed as a major victory for the ISFL. Playing for his hometown team and coach Buster Bawlls was enticing. Despite his impeccable talent, his rookie contract was only worth a league standard $1,000,000.
