Tyrell had lived in Toronto until he was 8 years old, His family then moved to Duncanville Texas due to his father getting a new job there. Tyrell had played cornerback on the football field and point guard on the basketball court at Duncanville High School. When he was a sophomore he became a 5 Star athlete in both sports. When teams started recruiting Tyrell some offered for strictly football and some offered for strictly basketball. The one school who offered Tyrell both a starting spot for both sports was Oregon. Tyrell had taken a few visits to Oregon but he didn't commit there until his junior year. Soon after Tyrell committed to Oregon he quickly reclassified to be apart of the class of 2053 and go to college one year earlier. However this could've been the best decision for Tyrell as he went onto become the #3 recruit in the nation for both football and basketball. Tyrell had become a star waiting to become a collegiate star.

On the basketball court he put up 18 in his first game. Tyrell became a consistent 2 sport player while leading both teams as their captain. In the NBA draft rankings he wasn't highly regarded but was a late first round pick. In his sophomore year out of the blue Tyrell made a shocking decision, Tyrell had declared for the NBA draft. He impressed in the combine though but after a conversation with Oregon's football coach he soon took his name out of the draft. After realizing the NBA route wouldn't work Tyrell put all of his effort into football, Ultimately quitting the basketball team. In his junior year Tyrell had a monster season, getting 50 tackles with 7 interceptions on the year. The DFSL was calling his name but Tyrell chose to stay for 1 more year at the University of Oregon. Well, He had another monster season getting 62 tackles with 8 interceptions on the year and leading Oregon to a national championship.
