James "Mania" Hoffman (born October 5, 2015) is an American football cornerback who is currently preparing to enter the professional ranks.He played college football for Ohio State University (OSU) and has declared his intent to enter the professional ranks next season.

Early years

James Hoffman is the younger of two sons born to single mother Marianne Hoffman, the older brother being Bobby Hoffman. James attended Bloom Trail High School and competed in several athletic extracurriculars, most notably track and field and football.

James and Bobby both excelled in football and each set numerous school records. Bobby as a defensive end shattered the school records for sacks. James as a cornerback set the record for passes defensed, interceptions, and defensive touchdowns while also obliterating school records for punt and kick return yards, receiving yards and touchdowns, and special teams scores.

The brothers’ accolades as a defensive unit earned them the local nickname, “The Terrors of Cook County.” Both James and Bobby were heavily scouted by colleges around the nation, though most scouts believed the latter was the superior player and the former had too many behavioral issues to be considered worthy of a D1 scholarship.

Finishing his senior year without any D1 offers, James elected to take a year off after high school before enrolling in junior college.

College career

Without any D1 scholarship offers coming out of high school, Hoffman elected to work for his uncle’s local construction company rather than continue his education.

Hoffman has described his year off as “one of the darkest times in his life.” Feeling depressed and lost without football and without the company of his brother, Bobby (who had gone to Notre Dame on a football scholarship the year prior), Hoffman resorted to drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism.

After serving a brief stint in Cook County Jail on possession charges, Hoffman became sober and notes that religion has played a large role in helping him do so.

At the behest of his mother, Hoffman enrolled at Joliet Junior College where he studied for a degree in communications. While attending class, he was approached by coach Benj Gillord of the Wolves’ football program. Noting Hoffman’s legacy in the area as a high-energy player, Gillord offered him a spot on the team as a walk-on. Hoffman’ impact on the team was felt immediately. Playing both sides of the ball and special teams, he shored up holes all over the roster and led the team to it’s best record in decades. In his first season at Joliet, Hoffman shattered the existing single-season records for total touchdowns, scrimmage yards, return yards, and interceptions. D1 scouts had begun to take notice of both Hoffman’s playing ability as well as his leadership qualities in the locker room and marked change in behavior, and offers gradually began to roll in from various universities throughout Hoffman's breakout JuCo season.

Hoffman eventually decided to play at Ohio State University for the Buckeyes for his sophomore season. Making the switch to a D1 school made it apparent that playing both sides of the ball wouldn’t last and with the Buckeyes having plenty of playmakers on offense, Hoffman resorted to eventually playing cornerback exclusively, though he did still return punts for the squad as well.

Hoffman’s ability to shutdown some of college football’s top wide receiver talents on a weekly basis earned him multiple defensive player of the week awards. In only his first year, he led the Buckeyes in turnovers created (7) and defensive touchdowns (2) while only allowing a single touchdown scored against him all season.

After a very respectable season, Hoffman elected to enter the DSFL draft rather than continue his education at Ohio State.
