Ultimus Bowl IV was an American football game played to determine the champion of the National Simulation Football League (NSFL) for 2019 (S4). The American Simulation Football Conference (ASFC) champion Orange County Otters defeated the National Simulation Football Conference (NSFC) champion Yellowknife Wraiths, 30-23, to win their first ever Ultimus. The game was played at Santa Ana Stadium in Santa Ana, California. It was the first Ultimus to not have the Arizona Outlaws representing the NSFC.

Background

Teams

The NSFC was represented by the Yellowknife Wraiths, and the ASFC was represented by the Orange County Otters. This was the first Ultimus since Ultimus I to have two different teams representing their respective conference.

Yellowknife Wraiths

After missing the playoffs in the previous year, The Yellowknife Wraiths would win 8 games to take the first seed in the conference and advance to the 2019 (S4) Ultimus. Melvin Mushing was named Offensive Lineman of the Year, and was the last OL award recipient until 2033 (S18).

Orange County Otters

Despite making the playoffs every year since 2016 (S1), this was the first season the Otters won the ASFC Championship to advance to the Ultimus. Their 9-5-0 record was enough to break a tie between them and the San Jose Sabercats, putting Orange County at the second seed. Mike Boss was named Quarterback of the Year for the second year in a row.

Playoffs

Yellowknife was able to rally from a 14 point deficit in the 4th quarter of the NSFC Championship to beat the Philadelphia Liberty in overtime, 26-20.

The Otters were, for the fourth playoffs series in a row, was pitted against the Arizona Outlaws. The Outlaws were the overwhelming favorites, after going 12-2-0 in the regular season and winning both games against the Otters. This time, however, the Otters were able to upset the Outlaws thanks to the defense picking off Outlaws quarterback King Bronko twice, and the offense being able to find the end zone three times.

Game summary

First Quarter

On their first drive, Wraiths quarterback Mat Akselsen threw a 32 yard touchdown to DJ Law to put them up early. The Otters would later match this with a 44 yard touchdown pass from Mike Boss to Bradley Westfield. A fumble recovery off a sack from Mat Akelsen set up another Otters scoring drive, a 28 yard field goal by Bradley Madlad. At the end of the first, Mike Boss threw another touchdown to Bradley Westfield, this one a 35 yarder. Both quarterbacks received a pair of sacks in this quarter.

Second Quarter

A near three minute drive by the Wraiths would start the second quarter with a 46 yard field goal by kicker Joesph Lombardi. The Otters would again respond with their own field goal three drives later, a 44 yarder by Madlad. This would be the last scoring play of the first half, as both quarterbacks received another sack, along with Mike Boss throwing his first interception of the game.

Third Quarter

The Otters got the ball to start the second half, but Mike Boss threw another interception at their own 31. This looked to set up a Wraiths touchdown to keep the score within 3 points. However, the Otters were able to sack Akelsen to force the Wraiths to kick a 37 yard field goal. In the next Otters drive, Mike Boss threw for a third touchdown, this one a 22 yarder to Robert Phelps. A three and out by the Wraiths would set up a long drive by the Otters, which ended with a 30 yard field goal. This was the Otters last score of the game. The Wraiths would get the ball back and run the ball into the end zone with Bubba Nuck to keep the game within range.

Fourth Quarter

A crucial penalty on the Otters gave the Wraiths another field goal with 8:14 left on the clock, enough time for a comeback. However, this would be the last scoring drive of the game, as penalties and a sack on each quarterback held off momentum for another scoring drive. The Otters won, 30-23.
