Tugg Speedman (born July 7, 2020) was an American football wide receiver for the New York Silverbacks of the International Simulation Football League (ISFL). He was inducted into the ISFL Hall of Fame in Season 42.

Early years

Hailing out of Cleveland, Ohio Tugg was an all-Ohio player in High School. Practically born with a football in his hands, Tugg dominated at every level and has gone from being a Quarterback to a Running Back to settling on Wide Receiver due to his phenomenal speed and one of a kind catching ability. He set every imaginable wide receiver record his senior year of high school for not only his school but the state of Ohio. During his freshmen season of high school Tugg started on varsity and worked his way into being the number one wide receiver. He put up a modest 40 catches and 800 yards with 3 touchdowns. The team just missed out on the playoffs. During his sophomore season, Tugg maintained his number one receiver status and put up 60 catches, 980 yards, and 9 touchdowns. Again, the team failed to make the playoffs. Junior year is when things took off. Tugg reeled in 78 catches and 1,200 yards in addition to 11 touchdowns. He also began returning kicks and punts. He had a total of 4 touchdowns between the two and helped carry his team to the playoffs. They made it to the semi-finals where they were beaten by the previous years champions. Colleges really began to take notice now. During his senior season, Tugg put up 96 receptions and 1,400 yards with 14 touchdowns. He maintained his returner duties where he had a whopping 6 returned touchdowns. He carried his team to a high school football championship, where they went out on top with a blowout win over their opponent.

College career

Tugg had offers from every single Power 5 Football Conference but he knew he wanted to get the ball as much as possible as a wide receiver so he narrowed his search down to the Big 12 Conference. Realistically he knew no matter which school he chose, he was going to make an immediate impact and would go on to break records. Ultimately, he picked Texas Christian University (TCU) because of their dope ass uniforms and past success. During his time in college, Tugg continued his success and set records at the school and national level. After dominating for 2 seasons and winning the Heisman Trophy and being a National Champion during his second season, Tugg decided to leave school and prepare for the draft however after realizing that he could enter waivers for the Developmental Simulation Football League and earn some cash money while doing it. During his freshman season, Tugg hauled in 98 receptions and 1,451 yards with 11 touchdowns. During his first year on campus, TCU went on to go 9-2 and won the Fiesta Bowl over the Auburn Tigers. His sophomore season he built on this success and put up 122 receptions and 1,746 yards with 18 touchdowns for the Horned Frogs. That season, the Horned Frogs went undefeated and beat fellow undefeated Ohio State Buckeyes 38-27 in an all-time National Championship game.

Speedman spent a small amount of time with the Portland Pythons after being acquired on the post Trade Deadline waivers. He had 3 receptions for 28 yards and no touchdowns with Portland. In their playoff loss to the London Royals, Tugg had 2 catches for 13 yards. Following this stint with the Pythons, Tugg declared that he wanted to go through the Developmental Simulation Football League (DSFL) Draft to see who wanted him and how high he would get picked. During the draft despite being a top prospect, Tugg fell and landed with the London Royals with the last pick in the second round (16th overall). Ironically, despite falling that far, this is where Tugg wanted to go after having really good scouting interviews with the London brass. In his first season with the London Royals, Tugg Speedman was their leading receiver with 73 catches, 841 yards, and 4 touchdowns. It was a relatively good official rookie season where Tugg actually broke a couple team records. The first being yards in a game which came in Week 4 against the then Myrtle Beach Buccaneers where Tugg had 153 receiving yards. The second being a franchise record for catches in a season with 73. The Royals went 11-3 and made the playoffs. In their first playoff game the Royals beat the Minnesota Grey Ducks 33-13 and saw Tugg have a really clutch coming out party where he had 9 catches for 113 yards and a touchdown. Unfortunately, the Ultimini saw the Tijuana Luchadores defy all odds and crush the London Royals 42-16. In this game, Tugg had 5 catches for 103 yards. At the year end awards ceremony Tugg was nominated for Wide Receiver of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year, where he lost in both categories. Now between his first and second season with London, Tugg was being scouted for the International Simulation Football League (ISFL) Draft. Most mocks had Tugg going in the first round which ended up coming true as he was the very last pick in the first round (14th overall) going to the San Jose Silverbacks. Speedman was informed that he was going to be staying down another season with London, which he was okay with since he wanted to run it back for the Ultimini.

S26 - Second Season with London

2041 (S26) Royals 14 60 872 14.5 43 6

In his second season with the London Royals, Tugg had a good follow up season which saw him sharing more in the wide receiver room. He came away with 60 catches, 872 yards, and 6 touchdowns as the Royals went 9-5 and secured another another playoff berth. The first round saw London losing to the Portland Pythons 13-23, where Tugg had a very quiet game of just 3 catches for 36 yards. An early exit for the Royals this time around and Speedman's last chance at the Ultimini as he would be getting called up the upcoming offseason. The year end awards once again saw Tugg in the wide Receiver of the year category and again he only came away with the nomination and no award. The offseason leading into his rookie season in the ISFL, Speedman transitioned his game as a possession receiver to a slot receiver due to his electric speed, smaller size, and phenomenal hands. He was looking forward to the next step in his career and while he loved his time in London, it was time to head back to the United States, specially in San Jose, California to start training for the upcoming season.

S27 - Rookie Season w/ San Jose

In his rookie season with San Jose, Tugg was clearly not a first, second, or even third option in the passing game with the multiple high-earning players they already had on the team. This led to an underwhelming rookie season where Tugg had 55 catches, 602 yards, and no touchdowns. It was a pretty frustrating season overall as not only did Tugg not perform well, and with media scrutiny of being a first round pick but the Sabercats also missed out on the playoffs by one game. Speedman took this rather personally with such high expectations set by others but also himself. Tugg also knew that if some things didn't change in his second season, he didn't really see himself being with San Jose long term.

S28 - Traded to NYS

After seeing the San Jose Sabercats beef up their offense and add additional weapons, Tugg felt it necessary to speak up to management and let them know he would like to be traded during the offseason. Unfortunately for Tugg, this did not happen until the Trade Deadline where he was still putting up pretty miserable numbers but it did end up happening and he was sent to the New York Silverbacks. He ended the season with relatively decent numbers and had a nice second half boost in a new offense where he wasn't a 4th or 5th option. Tugg essentially improved in all statistical categories however he did not win breakout player of the year, which many considered a snub. Speedman would agree to a contract extension with New York almost immediately as they laid out their plan for him and how they could help him achieve in the Big Apple.

S29 - Second Season With New York

In his second season (first full season with the New York Silverbacks), Speedman saw a dramatic increase in targets, receptions, a slight increase in yards (finally breaking 1,000 yards), and a dramatic decrease in touchdowns. Overall it was a successful season for Tugg personally as he hit some seasonal target numbers statistically which he had not done in his first two season in the International Simulation Football League. This was also the season that he won his first Ultimus with the Silverbacks which was a true underdog story through and through. With Jackson Kingston still the number one wide receiver with the Silverbacks, Tugg took this time to learn under him and get better. With a long-term home found in New York Tugg hit the ground running and was looking to build on this new journey and with financial security, the only thing Tugg needed to focus on now was getting better and building something special with New York.

S30 - Prime Time Tugg

Now that Jackson Kingston officially left the New York Silverbacks, Tugg is the number 1 wide receiver and he did not disappoint. Having by far his best career year, Tugg and the Silverbacks went 11-5 and made the playoffs. After a dominating victory against the Austin Copperheads, the Silverbacks were then shut out by the Arizona Outlaws in the ASFC Championship Game, ruining their chances at winning back to back Ultimus'. Tugg was one of the best receivers on the year and was in consideration for Wide Receiver of the Year however it was not his time just yet. Additionally with the exit of Jackson Kingston - Tugg began doing kick returns and he saw his first special teams touchdown of his career. Tugg and the Silverbacks look to bounce back in Season 31 as they are still hungry to win another championship with a top notch core relatively still together. Season 30 was also Tugg's first Pro Bowl which he made for the ASFC Special Teams and Offensive Flex.

S31 - Good Year, No Playoffs

After a wildy successful season for both Tugg and the New York Silverbacks, this season brought on a losing record, no playoffs, but another statistically successful season for Speedman. Tugg hit 100+ receptions and 1300 yards for the second consecutive season and saw his first double digit touchdown season as well. This was also the first season Tugg began doing both kick returns and punt returns for the team and while he did not reach the endzone, he did have a pretty good statistical season. Season 31 was the second time Tugg made a Pro Bowl, this time as a Wide Receiver. While this season was a let down for everyone in the front office and locker room, the team vowed to do better especially since the next season would be Quarterback Sam Howitzer's last, who Speedman had grown close to. Tugg got to work and prepared for what would be his best season yet in the International Simulation Football League.

S32 - Ultimus #2 and Wide Receiver of the Year

2047 (S32) Silverbacks 16 117 1781 13.3 86 13

Season 32 will probably go down as Tugg Speedman's most notable season of his career for a couple reasons. Namely because he won his first major International Simulation Football League award with his Wide Receiver of the Year win and Most Valuable Player nomination. Tugg put up 1,781 yards which is a top 10 season all-time for yards. Tugg had another successful season as a returner for the Silverbacks this time being nominated as returner of the year. In a surprise win, Tugg also won Returner of the Year in addition to receiving 2 Pro Bowl nods, this time as a Wide Receiver and for Special Teams. Tugg and retiring Quarterback Sam Howitzer had the greatest season of each other's careers and helping send Howitzer on top with another Ultimus win. In what appears to be another year as an underdog entering the playoffs (at least based on wins), New York was able to beat Austin in Overtime then bear Arizona in the ASFC Championship Game. Then the Silverbacks were able to win another close one, this time against the Berlin Fire Salamanders in an instant classic.

S33 - Another Year with New York

Season 33 was another successful campaign for Tugg statistically as it was another 100+ reception and 1300+ yard season with 9 touchdowns thrown in the mix. It was also a very successful season as a returner as he almost put up 850 kick return yards and he had a punt return touchdown. Tugg was nominated for Returner of the Year again and received a Pro Bowl nod for Special Teams. As a team, the Silverbacks struggled after winning an Ultimus again, this time going 6-10 after starting 4-2 on the season. With Malcolm Savage as the new Quarterback, he and Tugg seemed to be able to make a pretty solid connection although it did take a couple of weeks during the regular season to get completely on the same page. Tugg took it upon himself to put in extra work with Savage who was just a rookie and they were able to build a good rapport.

S34 - More of the Same

Season 34 was is a bit of a "more of the same" season for Tugg. Another 100+ reception and 1300+ yard season making that five straight now for Speedman. This being Tugg's 6th full season on the team, he became the all-time Silverback receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns leader in franchise history passing notable former number one receiver Jackson Kingston. This was one of Tugg's desired goals as a player was to go down as the greatest in franchise history as well as hopefully become a Hall of Famer at some point. This was also another season of successful returning as Tugg was nominated for yet another returner of the year award with results still pending. While the season started a bit slow for Tugg, him and Quarterback Malcolm Savage found their stride about halfway through the season however by the time they started picking things up the team went on a 4 game losing skid before winning their final two games and ultimately missing out on the playoffs.

S35 - Another Year Older

Season 35 was another season in the books for Tugg and the Silverbacks. Unfortunately from a team standpoint, New York went 6-10 amnd failed to make the playoffs again. It was hard to fathom with rising star QB Malcolm Savage being relatively hot and cold despite incredible measurables. While Tugg has won two rings with New York, he still wanted to make the playoffs and make another run for a championship - that drive never faded. Personally for Tugg, he made some strong gains toward his possible Hall of Fame career as he put up his sixth straight season of 100 receptions and 1200 yards. He also tied a career high in touchdowns with 13 which was definitely a highlight for him this late in his career. With another season coming and going, Tugg was really starting to contemplate his future and how much longer he would be able to keep going.

S36 - The End Is Near

Season statistics Receiving

2051 (S36) Silverbacks 16 90 1048 11.6 57 6

Season 36 was a noticeable decline in Tugg's ability as he hit the ten year mark on his career. He wasn't able to carry the receiving team like he was previously, breaking his streak of consecutive seasons with 100+ receptions and 1200+ yards. He was beginning to mentor the younger receivers as they were really starting to age him and he was essentially the oldest member of the Silverbacks. On top of this, New York finished 5-11, worse than the previous season and really marking the end of the dynasty Tugg was a part of when he first joined the team. Tugg was not bitter, he knew that things like this goes in cycles and with his decline getting worse, he knew the next season would be his last before he ventured off to his post-football career. With that, Tugg made an announcement of his intent to retire the following season and there was not a dry eye in the press conference.

S37 - The Last Tugg

Season 37 was the end of the road for Tugg Speedman's career. He saw his stats cut in half (as expected) but was able to mentor the young receivers that came to the team through free agency, trades, and the draft. The impact on the field might not have been quite what he wanted but the impact off the field was. Throughout the season it was difficult to see the usage not there like it once was but with age and decline comes knowing your place on the team and Tugg had accepted that going into this final season. Luckily, Tugg was able to spend extra effort on his post-playing career as an agent and got his first client in an up and coming running back. Tugg is excited to help continue mentoring players and hopefully, with some luck will see the Hall of Fame after an illustrious career with the San Jose Sabercats and the New York Silverbacks.
