Tommy John Helanen (born January 26, 1995) is an American football wide receiver. He played college football for Cleveland State University.

Early years

Tommy Helanen was born in Cleveland, Ohio to two mid-twenties working class parents. His middle name was the first name of his older brother, John Helanen Jr. His mother was a waitress at a local pizza parlor while his father worked three jobs just to make ends meet. Academics were never his strong suit, and after being diagnosed with ADD, it was understood why he had difficulty studying or focusing in class. He tried basketball as a Point Guard in 7th grade in middle school, but had no interest in continuing and quit halfway through the season. He was simply too muscular and not strong enough to be adept in that sport anyways. His parents encouraged him to play football in high school as a way to get a scholarship, and Tommy obliged their wishes since his best friend, Evan Lee, was also on the team. He discovered his love for the game, and skipped lunches to scrounge up money for basic gear.. He started as a Running Back, but quickly switched to Wide Receiver, as it played better to his quickness. He also worked as a cashier at the local grocery store from the time he was 15, in order to help support himself and his family. He was such a hard worker and charming personality, so thanks to glowing customer reviews, he was quickly promoted up to supervisor and stayed with the company until after he completed college. His other hobbies included chess, poker, guitar, and video games; he plays Mario Kart often with his brother, even to this day.

College career

Attending Cleveland State University on an athletic scholarship, Tommy Helanen was always a starter. Thanks to his speed, he led his team in yards and touchdowns every year. He was awarded the captaincy of the team in his senior year, but did not get drafted to the NFL. He majored in Sports and Fitness Administration, with plans to be a coach at the professional level either after his career, or if he could not find a team. Due to college rules, he was nearly booted off the team in his sophomore year due to poor grades, as he was flunking College Algebra and was placed on academic probation. He managed to stay above water, earn his bachelor's degree, and play for the team each year. He took a job with the same high school he played for formerly as the football coach and gym teacher.
