Sheriff Woody (born July 9, 2004) is an American football linebacker for the Baltimore Hawks of the International Simulation Football League (ISFL).

Early years

Sheriff Woody was made in 2004 as a toy version of the main character from once beloved children’s television show “Woody’s Roundup”. The show, which was cancelled right before its final episode aired as a result of children preferring space related toys to western ones, ran from 1949-1957 and featured the titular Woody along with friends Jessie, Stinky Pete, and his horse Bullseye. Much of the show revolved around Woody saving his friends, with the unaired series finale meant to show Woody’s Finest Hour. Sheriff Woody, however, always believes his finest hour is yet to come. While friendship is a cornerstone of not only the show but his personal core values, anyone can leap the Grand Canyon on a horse and save their friends from a mine explosion. While Woody was made well after the show aired, the spirit of the Sheriff lives on within him. While this Sheriff Woody isn’t the only Sheriff Woody ever made, he’s the only one worldwide (that is known of) that is an original and in perfect condition.

Woody was purchased by a woman named Mrs. Davis for her son, Andy, and quickly became Andy’s favourite toy. A natural born (or rather, made) leader, Woody was looked up to by all of Andy’s other toys, and became the de facto leader of the group. To this day, Woody’s right boot still has Andy’s name written on it. One day, much like the show he was based on, Andy started to prefer space themed toys to western ones, and Buzz Lightyear began competing for the title of Andy’s favourite toy. Woody and Buzz then left the Davis residence following a series of misunderstandings, and this is when Woody got his passion for sports.

Much of the adventures that followed the accidental escape required Woody to run, and often tackle Buzz to the ground. His polymer exterior never tired while running, and when he hit someone and took them down, his cotton insides absorbed the blow. He realized that he could run, hit, tackle, or get by people all without ever getting winded. Buzz and Woody eventually made it back to Andy’s safely, and Woody was re-instated as favourite toy given his history with Andy.

One day, while watching TV with Andy, a football game came on the television. Woody was transfixed immediately. He knew he could run and hit and be great at football. Unfortunately, to be able to play football, you have to move in front of humans, something toys are never to do. So he allowed that dream to be just that, a dream, and be content in his life with Andy and the other toys.

College career

A few years after the incident surrounding Buzz and his misadventures with Al’s Toy Barn, Andy was taking off to head to college. He planned to take Woody with him, but ultimately decided he wasn’t going to be able to do it. Woody and his friends were donated to a day care centre, where they were under the impression that they would be able to make all sorts of children happy. Life doesn’t always go the way you think it will, however, and the centre ended up being a place of nightmares for all the toys. Leading a daring escape, Woody and his friends got out of the day care, and made it back to Andy. Andy then gave his toys to someone who could use them more than he could in college, a girl named Bonnie. Andy was going to take Woody with him to college, and Woody thought maybe this could be his chance to play football, although there was still the issue of moving in front of people to contend with. When it came time to leave, Bonnie found Woody and instantly fell in love with him just as Andy had before. Knowing what it would mean to Bonnie, Andy left Woody with her.

After this incident, Woody decided against ever going to college and playing for a college team, since it seemed clear his talents were best playing with kids and making them happier than playing football. One day, however, Bonnie was all grown up herself. For the first time in his life, Woody had complete free reign over what he should do. He told his friends his plan, and while there was a lot of protesting about breaking one of the key rules of being a toy, they supported him as a group in pursuing his dreams. The Sheriff then shocked the world by not only showing the world of humans that he was alive, but that he was entering the draft to play in the International Simulation Football League. He’s at a bit of a disadvantage having never played a snap before, but he’s got time in the Development League to get his feet wet, and plenty of raw talent at the sport.

Professional career

2043 Season

Sheriff Woody made his professional debut in Week 11 of 2043 as a waiver addition for the Tijuana Luchadores. Many football fans were skeptical of the toy’s ability to make an impact given his small size. However, critics were quickly silenced. Immediately making an impact in his debut performance, Woody was able to make 6 tackles, a TFL, and a pass deflection. Unfortunately, this wasn’t enough as Tijuana would go on to lose 28-27 to the London Royals. In his second game, Woody was all over the field. Racking up 9 tackles and 2 TFLs, he was a huge reason the Luchadores were able to get a 35-3 lead in the first half. The following week, Woody was able to really show off his ability to make surprising plays, someone leaping high enough to pick off Dexter Zaylren with his back to the end zone. This momentum shift would be massive and Tijuana would go on to win that game as well. In their final regular season game of 2043, Tijuana had an all round stellar performance, winning 34-7 over the Dallas Birddogs.

In the 2043 playoffs, Tijuana were able to beat the Bondi Beach Buccaneers and advance to the Ultimini. Reaching the championship game in his first ever season certainly set expectations high for Woody. Unfortunately, the Luchadores would fall to the London Royals in the Ultimini, ending Woody’s seasons and putting him eligible for the DSFL draft. Lots of hype surrounded the prospect who has shown size is not everything in football.

2044 Season

Several teams showed interest in Sheriff Woody during the 2044 offseason, scouts from all over the country were organizing interviews to see how the player would fit with their team both in the locker room and on the field. Ultimately, only one team really made sense. Getting on as fast friends with Head Coach Forrest Gump and Special Teams Coordinator Jimmy Dugan, the Tijuana Luchadores brought back Woody with their first round pick 7th overall pick. Thrilled to be reunited with the team he joined in the Ultimini the previous season, Woody was ready to get back to work.

Woody slotted right back into the role he had filled the previous season with the Luchadores, leading the organization in tackles with 82. He lead all linebackers across the league in interceptions that year as well. Woody’s first career sack did not come until Week 10 of 2044, however it was an incredibly impactful one. Having already picked off Dexter Zaylren in this game, Woody sacked the quarterback, forced a fumble, recovered it and was able to run it back to the endzone, scoring his first DSFL touchdown on the same play as his first sack.

The Luchadores were able to make the playoffs in Woody’s first full season with the team, and would be his second trip to the postseason with the team overall. In the first playoff game, Woody won Defensive Player of the Game for his 9 tackles and a strip sack on third down on Tijuana’s 22 yard line which would set up a Tijuana touchdown. Yet again, Tijuana would fall short in the Ultimini game, getting blown out 40-0 by the Minnesota Grey Ducks.

2045 Season

ISFL draft hype surrounding the first toy football player ever was sky high. Pundits speculated around where he would be picked, and scouts were arranging interviews left and right. As the 2045 Combine was cancelled, interviews and DSFL film were crucial for teams trying to decide between a wealth of excellent prospects.

By the time the draft was rolling around, the vast majority of the league were sure of where Woody would be drafted. With the Baltimore Hawks possessing the first overall pick in the middle of a rebuild, and with them needing a linebacker, it was a match made in heaven. Woody was ecstatic to get to be a part of a franchise building for the future, and wanted to be a massive part of the turnaround from the beginning.

While he played a bit more of an inside linebacker role with the Luchadores, Woody spent OTAs working with the Baltimore coaches, and it was agreed his skillset was more built for a pass rushing role. His size and speed make more sense for trying to dart around offensive tackles than to try to leap and swat down the football. As the Hawks were shifting the a 3-4 defense, this was perfect for the organization as well.

Despite rumours that Woody was requesting an additional season with the Tijuana Luchadores, he was called up to make an instant impact for the Hawks. Turning in a very respectable rookie campaign, expectations for Woody’s future continued to grow.

Baltimore ended up once again with the first overall pick, drafting a defensive end Morpheus Czargyros. Woody could not have been happier to be gaining additional help in the front seven, especially one of Czargyros's caliber.

2046 Season

In his sophomore season with the Baltimore Hawks, Woody showed steady improvement, particularly in packages where the offense would expect him to blitz but then he would drop back to defend this pass. His improved ability to fool the quarterback into throwing his way on quick passing plays allowed him to swat 12 passes and intercept another 2. Those 2 interceptions were able to help Baltimore achieve the jointly highest team interception total in the ISFL. He also showed improvements in getting to the quarterback, garnering double digit sacks for the first time in his career in either league.

Baltimore, still deep into a rebuild with a ton of youth to build off of, finished 4-12 for the second season in a row. However, the team certainly showed signs of improvement, with 7 of those losses being within a single possession. While the team was still struggling, the growth from the previous 4-12 season was evident.

2047 Season

Sensing that their core was starting to really improve, the Hawks traded up with Orange County and secured the first and second overall pick of the 2047 draft. The team then selected the first ever tight end taken with a first overall pick. While some pundits criticized the idea of not only trading up to hold both 1 and 2 overall and then use one of them to draft a second tight end, anyone who knows Graf’s character could attest to the quality of that pick. With the second pick, the Hawks added additional help on the defensive side of the ball, bolstering the secondary with Pasta the Turtle.

Woody was able to surpass 100 tackles in a single season for the first time ever in 2047. As with the previous season, his abilities a pass rusher continued to improve, bringing the quarterback down 13 times in 16 games.

It was another frustrating but still positive season for Baltimore fans, finishing 5-11 with 7 losses within 7 points.

2048 Season

Without a first round pick in the draft, Baltimore went very heavy into the free agent market to complement the core of the team that would really hit its stride in 2048. The franchise would re-sign Sheriff Woody and Busch Goose, and bring in cornerback Raeni Clarke and wide receiver Sam the Onion Man. With the franchise poised to turn the franchise around and move from rebuilding team to playoff contender, these two additions were massive in taking the team to that next level.

Woody was able to take full advantage of the overall improvements to the team combined with his own development and exploded into a pass rushing machine. Racking up an eye popping 19 sacks, he was second in the league among all players in that category. He also had arguably the best single defensive play of the year in Week 1 of the season, sacking Chicago quarterback Kazimir Oles Jr in the end zone in overtime, thereby scoring the ISFL’s first ever walk off safety.

Baltimore made it to the postseason as a wild card team, marking the first ISFL playoff appearance for Sheriff Woody, and Baltimore’s first playoff appearance in 12 years. He wasted no time making a postseason impact, gaining 2 sacks, a TFL, and 6 tackles in the Wild Card game. In the Conference Championship, Woody once again made his presence felt with 6 tackles, 3 TFLs and a sack. With a win over the Sailfish, the Hawks were heading to the Ultimus Championship game. Going down 24-0 early to the Otters, it felt quickly like Woody’s second Ultimini where the Luchadores fell to the Grey Ducks 40-0. However, as captain of the defense, the Sheriff would not let morale drop. Hyping up the team with a sack of his own, the tides started to turn. 24-0 turned into 24-14 and there was a glimmer of hope. With 5:14 left in the 4th quarter, Baltimore was still down 38-24 and needed a miracle. The defense rallied and the offense began marching down the field. Somehow, in those 5 minutes, the Hawks were able to score 2 touchdowns and a field goal while conceding no points. The rebuild had paid off, everyone who stuck with the team got rewarded with a championship ring.

Woody could not be happier with how the organization supported him in becoming an elite edge rusher, and reiterated his support for the club by signing a 4 year contract with the club right after the Ultimus victory.
