Sebastian Vettel (born July 3, 1983) is an American football safety for the Minnesota Grey Ducks of the Developmental Simulation Football League (DSFL).

Early years

Vettel was born in Heppenheim, then West Germany, to Norbert and Heike Vettel. He has one younger brother, Fabian, and two older sisters: Melanie, a dental technician, and Stefanie, a physiotherapist for disabled children. He has said that his childhood heroes were "The three Michaels" – Michael Schumacher, Michael Jordan, and Michael Jackson. Vettel has stated that he wanted to be a singer like Michael Jackson, but realised that he could not as he did not have the voice. Vettel is also a fan of The Beatles, collecting several records, including Abbey Road and his favourite song being "Drive My Car".

Vettel lives in Thurgovia, Switzerland amongst other current and former racing drivers, and is a fan of German football team Eintracht Frankfurt. Vettel has described himself as competitive, private, and impatient. Vettel married childhood friend Hanna Prater in early 2019. Vettel has three children by his wife Hanna: Emilie, born in January 2014, Matilda, born in September 2015, and a son born 28 November, 2019.

Vettel is mostly well known due to his former career as a Formula 1 driver. During his time in Formula 1, Vettel won 53 Grand Prix while racing for Scuderia Toro Rosso, Infiniti Red Bull Racing (now Aston Martin Red Bull Racing), and Scuderia Ferrari F1 Team. During his tenure as Red Bull Racing's number 1 driver, Vettel won four straight F1 Driver's Championships (2010-2013). Over his entire F1 career, Vettel started 240 races, finishing on the podium 120 times.

College career

In an extremely surprising move, Vettel decided to enroll at the University of Florida in Spring 2035 and announced his intention to play for the Florida Gators football team as a walk-on, playing defensive back (primarily safety). During his time in Formula 1, Vettel was well known as a dedicated athlete at the peak of fitness, but by 2035 he had been away from the sport for 15 years. Coach Dan Mullen welcomed the high profile athlete to the team in a move that some said was purely for the "good PR" to help with recruiting and sponsorship. Many were skeptical about whether or not Vettel would be able to transition to a brand new sport while overcoming a potential athletic deficit when compared with the younger players he would be playing with and against. However, Vettel surprised the critics by actually making the team; Coach Mullen would later say that Vettel had "one of the best training camps we've ever seen from a rookie". Still, heading into the 2035 regular season, expectations were tempered; nobody expected Vettel to be much of a contributor for the Gators defense, especially against the high powered offenses in the SEC.

Vettel saw his first action in Week 1 against the Miami Hurricanes, coming into the game at free safety with 8:02 remaining in the third quarter after several injuries took their toll in the Gators secondary. Vettel would be immediately targeted by the Miami offense, but the Gators pulled out a win 24-20. Vettel totaled 6 tackles and 1 pass defensed, but also allowed 4 catches for 49 yards. After the game, Vettel said he was "a little surprised by the speed of the live game", but said that he himself would be able to play faster as he became more comfortable in the defensive scheme.

On the Wednesday before the Gators week 2 game against Tennessee-Martin, Coach Mullen announced that the former F1 star would be starting at safety for the rest of the season due to injuries forcing out three key starters on the defense. Vettel played every defensive snap in the 45-0 win against TN-Martin and recorded the first of his two forced fumbles on the year. Vettel recorded his first career interception against Kentucky the following week. His breakout game came against SEC rival Tennessee in week 4; Vettel recorded 13 tackles (2 for loss), 1 sack, and 1 interception as the Gators defense held the Volunteers to only one field goal in the 34-3 win. Vettel won the SEC Defensive Player of the Week for his Week 4 performance. Over the rest of the season, Vettel would be the backbone of the Gators secondary. The highlight of the season came against SEC powerhouse Auburn in Week 6; during the matchup between the two AP top 10 ranked teams, Vettel intercepted an Auburn pass in the fourth quarter and returned it 72 yards for a touchdown to seal the win for the Gators, 24-13. He would be awarded his second SEC Defensive Player of the Week honor later that week.

Vettel finished the season with 4 interceptions (tied for the team lead) and 16 passes defensed, along with 73 total tackles (first among all Gators defensive backs), 2 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles. He also added two catches on offense for 19 yards and a touchdown on gadget plays. After the season, he was named a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, an honor given to the most outstanding collegiate defensive back during the regular season. Coach Mullen praised his star rookie safety after the season-ending win against Virginia in the Orange Bowl, saying that nobody could have expected a former race car driver would come into the SEC and immediately become one of the top defensive backs not just in the conference, but in the entire NCAA.

DSFL career

After his incredible season with the Florida Gators, Vettel announced his intention to enter the 2036 DSFL Draft, with the goal of eventually playing at the top level of simulation football in the NSFL. Vettel would later state that after his success with football at Florida, he entered the DSFL/NSFL wanting to prove that he could perform at the top level of the sport, similar to his rise in Formula 1 from the developmental team Scuderia Toro Rosso to his championship seasons at Infiniti Red Bull Racing. Vettel hired one of his long-time F1 fans, Phalanx32, as his agent and entered the S21 DSFL prospect pool as a mid value safety after his performance as the Gators defensive MVP the previous season. His value to DSFL GMs was diminished slightly due to questions about whether he was just a "one year wonder" after playing only one season in the NCAA. However, even the critics could not deny the impact his high level of play had in the Gators secondary during that single season. In the days leading up to the draft, his draft stock would rise after a stellar scouting report and scouting film were released. Some mock drafts projected him as a mid-to-late round selection, with a few media outlets rating him as a top 5 safety prospect potentially being taken in the early rounds.

With the first pick of the third round in the S21 DSFL Draft, Vettel was selected by the S20 DSFL Champion Minnesota Grey Ducks. At pick #17 overall, Vettel was the fourth safety and the eighth defensive back taken up to that point in the draft. He wasn't even the first safety taken by the Ducks; the Ducks selected fellow safety Buck Thornton with their first round pick. Many of the Vettel skeptics attributed his early round selection to the fact that there had already been a huge run on defensive backs by the time the third round started; nearly half of all players picked from #1 to #17 were either cornerbacks or safeties, and the Ducks may have felt pressured to pick him early or else risk missing out on a player they really wanted. Regardless, it was well known heading in to the draft that they were already high on the former Gators safety and valued him higher than most of the other DSFL teams.
