Robert "Bobby" Hoffman (born November 17, 2014) is an American football defensive end who is currently preparing to enter the professional ranks. He played college football for University of Notre Dame (ND) and has declared his intent to enter the professional ranks next season.

Early years

Bobby Hoffman is the older of two sons born to single mother Marianne Hoffman, the younger brother being James Hoffman. Bobby attended Bloom Trail High School and was an All-American football defensive end.

Bobby and his brother James combined to make a very formidable defensive duo. Both set numerous school records. Bobby shattered the school records for sacks. James as a cornerback set the record for passes defensed, interceptions, and defensive touchdowns while also obliterating school records for punt and kick return yards, receiving yards and touchdowns, and special teams scores.

The brothers’ accolades as a defensive unit earned them the local nickname, “The Terrors of Cook County.”

Both Bobby and James were heavily scouted by colleges around the nation, though most scouts believed the former was the far superior player and the latter had too many behavioral issues to be considered worthy of a D1 scholarship.

Considered a five-star recruit and one of the best edge rushers in the nation, Bobby received several offers for full scholarships and eventually committed to the University of Notre Dame.

College career

Hoffman committed to Notre Dame weeks before his high school graduation. The move came as a shock to many in the college football community as Hoffman had received offers from many more successful college programs. Hoffman has stated that his reasons for attending Notre Dame included being closer to home than many other college programs. He’s also stated that a rich school history and an excellent law curriculum were among his other primary reasons for attending.

Hoffman redshirted his freshman year as he learned behind the team’s veteran edge rushers. While his massive stature and power made him a force, the team believed he lacked technique.

In his sophomore year, Hoffman broke out almost immediately. He only started 9 games over the course of the season but his impact was felt immediately as he recorded 20 total tackles, including 10 TFLs and he led the team in sacks with 8.5. He also forced one fumble and assisted in one tackle that resulted in a safety.

Going into his junior season, Hoffman was considered one of the best edge rushers in the nation and was already talked about by pro scouts as potentially being the number one pick in the upcoming DSFL draft. Unfortunately, Hoffman’s season was largely a disappointment. It seemed as though opposing offenses had figured him out as he struggled to make an impact against even some of the Fighting Irish’s weaker opponents. Midway through the season, an x-ray revealed that Hoffman had broken a toe in his left foot that had been irritating him since training camp and had never healed properly. The injury required surgery and Hoffman missed the last 8 games of the season in recovery.

Though Hoffman’s junior year was derailed by an injury, he had seemed to regress even before his season ended. He had only accrued a single sack in 5 games and was largely a non-factor in most of the games he played. So going into his senior season, many didn’t know what to expect of the once-touted prospect. Hoffman’s senior year got off to a slow start, notching only 2 sacks and a handful of tackles through the Irish’s first two games. Though in the third game of the season, Hoffman flipped a switch against the intra-state rival Michigan Wolverines. Hoffman recorded 6 sacks in the single game, including 4 in the second quarter alone, helping his team to a blowout victory. The rest of the season went similarly for the defensive end, and even though he missed a single game due to a concussion, Hoffman finished the season with a whopping 18.5 sacks including 5 strip sacks and another forced fumble.

Some scouts still considered Hoffman to be a risky prospect. Either too injury prone or too inconsistent, he wasn’t ranked as highly as he once was on mock drafts. Regardless, after graduating with honors, Hoffman elected to forgo his final year of eligibility and entered the DSFL draft.
