Owen Holloway (born October 29, 2018) is an American football wide receiver who is currently a member of the Orange County Otters of the ISFL. He played college football for Kent State University (KSU) before being drafted to the Tijuana Luchadores of the DSFL, and subsequently traded to the Myrtle Beach Buccaneers.

Early years

Owen Holloway was born and raised in Anaheim, California, and played high school football at Junipero Serra in San Mateo, California. Prior to his senior year of high-school, he reclassified in order to graduate a season early and transition to the college ranks as early as possible. He was named All-State as a senior, his second year as the team's starter. He was listed as an unranked Dual-Threat Quarterback by both 247 and Rivals, and received offers from several Division I programs asking him to transition to wide receiver. Only one team, Kent State, where he ultimately signed, offered him the chance to play quarterback. Holloway was later quoted as saying that he regretted not being open to playing wide receiver in exchange for the opportunity to first compete as a quarterback at other schools, believing that the lack of competition at Kent State ultimately left him complacent and stunted his overall development as a quarterback.

College career

Holloway took the reigns as the starter for the Golden Flashes in his freshman year with Kent State, and winning the job in a spring battle with sophomore Charles Birmingham, who was the team's primary backup the season before. In his inaugural season as the starting quarterback, he led the Golden Flashes to a 6-5 record before missing the final game of the season to injury. He largely struggled as a passer, throwing for fewer than 2,000 yards and throwing more interceptions than touchdowns. Holloway's sophomore season began with another off-season quarterback competition. He managed to hold onto the job, and led the team to a 3-2 start before dropping three consecutive games. Holloway was benched after 8 games, giving way to George Carson. Carson was set to enter the subsequent season as the team's starter before suffering a torn ACL in spring practice, again leaving Holloway as the team's starter entering the new season. His junior season was by far his best, as the Golden Flashes won 8 games and Holloway accounted for more than 1,500 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards, also leading Kent State to a bowl win over Boston College. He declared for the DSFL Draft at the conclusion of the season.

DSFL career

In the run-up to the DSFL Draft, Holloway once again faced questions about his willingness to try his hand at another position. His unwillingness to line up anywhere but under center ultimately cost him, as he fell to the Tijuana Luchadores at the 84th Overall selection. Shortly after being selected, he was traded to Myrtle Beach for a player to be named later. In his first season with Myrtle Beach, Holloway struggled as a passer but excelled as a runner, rushing for nearly as many yards as he accumulated as a passer on roughly 80 fewer attempts. The highlight of his season was a Week 6 win over the Dallas Birddogs, in which Holloway rushed for 176 yards and two touchdowns on just eight attempts.

Following a Week 10 loss to the London Royals, Holloway relented on his desire to play quarterback and transitioned to the wide receiver position. He immediately stepped into the starting lineup following the switch after astounding the Buccaneer's coaching staff in practice with his route running ability. Holloway accumulated 16 receptions for 181 yards and 1 touchdown as a receiver in his final four games, making him the first player in DSFL history to reach 100 yards as a passer, rusher, and receiver.

Holloway declared for the ISFL Draft at the conclusion of the season and stated that he did not want to be sent back to Myrtle Beach, citing a desire to continue practicing his craft against the league's premier talent. He also intimated that he expected to be a featured part of the passing attack of any team that drafted him by no later than his second season in the league, an expectation that many believe is rooted more in fantasy than reality. That being said, Holloway's raw athletic talent and the smoothness of his transition to wide receiver have him ranked as a prospect likely to go in the first two or three rounds of the draft, though his over-confidence in his ability could cause teams to take pause.
