Orpheus Czargyros (born June 9, 2022) is an American football safety who was drafted by the Dallas Birddogs of the DSFL in the 2nd round of the S30 DSFL Draft and then by the San Jose Sabercats in the 1st round of the S31 ISFL draft.

Early years

Orpheus Czargyros was born alongside Morpheus Czargyros in their parents '76 Chevy pickup truck. He came into this earth ice cold, his mother in intense pain. Some say to this day his body is still absolutely frigid to the touch in comparison to his twin brother who is known to always be "sizzlin", though this has not actually been verified as Orpheus is constantly sporting a puffy jacket.

The Czargyros brothers had a relatively normal upbringing but both demonstrated that they were extremely gifted athletes at a young age. At Rancho Cucamonga High School, Orpheus was a two sport athlete competing in football and track and field. The Czargyros brothers were anchors on a dominant defensive line that helped bring home a state title for the Cougars in their senior year.

Orpheus was planning to attend the University of Georgia to play football after receiving an offer, however, on the night of the annual Rager Bangamonga, the biggest part in the town, Orpheus found himself in a bit of trouble with the law. After what the police could only surmise was a night of heavy drinking, Orpheus was found passed out in the parking lot of the local Sizzler wearing a snail costume. Witnesses that night claimed to see Orpheus running around spray painting the words 'snail down' on various pieces of public property, including the town statue of of Jack Benny located inside the lobby of the Family Lewis Playhouse of the Victoria Gardens Cultural Center. Upon his arrest, Orpheus cried out, "Wait Sizzler's almost open let me run in real quickly". Orpheus was stripped of his scholarship and his offer of acceptance to the University of Georgia. He instead opted to attend The University of Redlands, Rancho Cucamonga with his brother.

College career

The Czargyros brothers were a dominant force together once again for The University of Redlands, Rancho Cucamonga Bulldogs. Originally playing as a defensive end, Orpheus was moved to linebacker after losing a significant amount of weight in his freshman year. Some surmise that he gave up drinking after the Rager Bangamonga incident in order to never miss out on another opportunity and that led to his weight loss. A fantastic athlete, but a bit raw at a position requiring a different skillset, Orpheus was a second team All-American in his final season in which he recorded 15 sacks and 127 tackles.

DSFL Career

Orpheus was picked up as a waiver claim by the Kansas City Coyotes towards the end of the S29 in the DSFL. He had very little impact for the team in his few starts, but was well liked by the organization. Despite this, the Coyotes did not opt to draft Czargyros in the S30 DSFL draft and he was instead taken by the Dallas Birddogs in the second round.

ISFL Career

S33 Season

After a relatively quiet ISFL rookie season in S32, Orpheus really came into his own in S33. In the offseason, he was named defensive captain for the Sabercats, a testament to his impact off the field for the team as well as the work he had been putting in to get better on the field. As captain, Orpheus helped lead the Sabercats to......a 5-11 record, a big setback for the organization after what looked like a promising build up to a playoff appearance based on the steady improvement of the team's record year over year. While an unfortunate setback for the team, Czargyros personally had a huge season, racking up more than 100 tackles and double digit sacks in his first season starting all 16 games. His individual effort earned him a spot on the NSFC Pro Bowl roster, as well as the Defensive Breakout of the Year award. After the final game of the season, Orpheus announced that he was planning to change positions in the offseason, citing a need for more talent in the defensive secondary as the main motivation. A grueling offseason awaited him.

S34 Season

After his breakout season as a linebacker in S33, Orpheus was asked to switch to playing free safety for San Jose, a position that the team had been struggling to fill for many seasons. Orpheus was somewhat hesitant to make such a dramatic change to both his physique and his style of play right as he was coming into his own as a linebacker, but he knew that it would be worth the effort in the long run. It was this determination and dedication to the team that led to Orpheus being selected as the team's defensive captain for a second season in a row. Orpheus went through a brutal offseason regiment to prepare, shedding a significant amount of weight to become faster and more agile in the defensive secondary. While it took him a little while to get into a rhythm at safety, in the second half of the season, Orpheus went on a defensive rampage, recording a pick 6 in 3 out of the Sabercats last 5 games of the season and finishing the season with 4 total defensive touchdowns which tied the ISFL season record. Alas, despite a strong showing by Orpheus and the team in the back half of the season, an embarassing loss at home to the New York Silverbacks in the last game of the season left the team one win short of a playoff berth. San Jose would have to return to the drawing board in the offseason to figure out their next move after barely missing the playoffs yet again. As for Orpheus, his on field heroics did not go unnoticed. He was a unanimous pro bowl selection and was also named both Safety of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Seems like the transition to playing safety wasn't too big for Orpheus after all. But his mind wasn't on the awards. It was on what had to be done to get to the playoffs. A grueling offseason awaited him.
