Matt Murphy (born March 21, 2013) is an American football safety for the Minnesota Grey Ducks of the Developmental Simulation Football League (DSFL). He previosly played for the University of Michigan (UM) at College level before declaring for the S21 class of the National Simulation Football League (NSFL).
Early years
Matt Murphy was born in Boulder, Colorado, to James and Eleanor Murphy, former professional rock climbers based in the area. He has a younger brother, Joshua, who is also a professional climber.
As a child, Matt followed in his parents footsteps and became one of the best young climbers in the region, competing in state competitions up to the age of 16. At 16, Matt was introduced to Football by the school coach at Boulder High School. His finger strength, dexterity, and core strength allowed Matt to excel at first as a wide receiver before moving the cornerback position. Matt gave up his climbing and committed to Football, eventually being offered a scholarship from the University of Michigan, where he majored in Classic English Literature. His brother Joshua remains an active climber and today is one of the best sport climbers in the world.
College career
Freshman Season
Murphy impressed during pre-season training and immediately gained a place in the squad. He saw limited playing time as a Freshman, seeing snaps only in Dime formations and Hail Mary situations. Injuries in the second half of the season gave him a starting oppurtunity in the game against Wolverine rivals, the Michigan State Spartans. In this first full game as a starter, Murphy allowed only 2 receptions on 9 targets with 2 Passes defended and 6 tackles.
Sophomore Season
In his Sophomore season, Murphy began as the starting Cornerback for the Wolverines. As the season, Murphy progressiely saw more snaps as a Safety, primarily a Strong Safety, with more responsibility for stopping the run and targeting the Quarterback. Murphy thrived here, and in The Game against arch-rivals Ohio State, recorded a career game, notching 2 Sacks, 1 Forced Fumble, 1 Fumble Recovery, 2 interceptions, and 2 Defensive touchdowns. Murphy remained in the safety position for the remainder of the season. The Wolverines finished 12-1 but were not selected for the playoffs.
Junior Season
Murphy carried his strong Sophomore Season form into his Junior Season, recording 2 Sacks, 1 Forced Fumble and 3 Interceptions in his first 4 games. His season appeared to come to an early end when injured during the fourth game against Penn State in a contested catch situation, in which two of the fingers on his right hand were broken. He returned four weeks later, with the Wolverines sitting at 4-4 and well out of the playoffs, as a goodbye to the fans and his teammates, with the team aware he planned to forgeit the end of the College season and declare for the DSFL.

S19
Matt Murphy declared for the DSFL as a free agent in the 2034 season. He was picked up off of waivers by the Minnesotra Grey Ducks and signed to a $5 million rest-of-season contract in Week 11 of the regular season. He made his debut performance in week 13 in a win against the Norfolk Seawolves. Minnesota won their last 4 games to finish with a 9-5 record, beating the Portland Pythons to the top of the NFCN. Minnesota won the conference chamionship against the Pythons to advance to the Ultimini. The Grey Ducks went on the road to the Tijuana Luchadores to win the Ultimini, Murphy making 5 tackles, as well as forcing a fumble and recovering it for Minnesotas only turnover.
S20
Murphy was selected by the Minnesota Grey Ducks in the first round with the sixth overall selection. Before returning to Minnesota for the S20 season, Murphy took part in the Prospect Bowl as a member of the Inverness Unicorns, losing in their first game in Round 2 to the St Petersburg Polar Bears.
