Matt "Pretty Good" Krause (born August 11, 1996) is an American football cornerback for the San Jose Sabercats of the National Simulation Football League (NSFL).

Early years

A native of Dayton, Ohio, Krause attended Centerville High School where he was a standout two sport star. Krause was a standout pitcher for the baseball team and cornerback for the dominate football team that had current and former NFL players A.J. Hawk and Mike Nuggent. Krause decided to switch his main focus to football his junior year after conversations with coaches and scouts. Krause had a successful High school career racking up 9 interceptions in his junior year tying a school record, and gathering in another 4 his senior year for a total of 13 for his high school career.

Krause spent his pre-college years living with his mom, and frequently visiting his grandparents who had a great deal of influence on him and his life. His mom was a hard working single mother, who taught him the value of hard work. His grandpa a 31 year army veteran instilled discipline and respect on him and where he got his athletic ability.

College career

Krause accepted a full ride to USC in 2013 where he played for Lane Kiffin, Ed Orgeron and Clay Helton until the 2017 season.

As a true freshman Krause started all 14 games for the Trojans. He continued to live up to his 5-star prospect rating by amassing a total of 43 solo tackles of which 5.5 were for loss, 4 Interceptions with a total of 51 yds, 6 pass deflections and 1 forced fumble.

His Sophomore campaign was more of the same for Krause. We saw improvement in his bump and run coverage and great improvement in his hips. Although stats were similar with 41 Tackles, 6 for loss, 1 sack, 3 Interceptions and 8 Pass deflections. We saw big game improvement from his freshman year. He shut down the #1 wideouts for Oregon and Alabama in two primetime games. He received 2nd team all American honors and 1st team Pac-12 All conference.

Krause continued to be an anchor for the Trojans secondary his Junior year. This is possibly his best year for the team, although they struggled to an 8-6 record. Krause dazzled everyone with his stat line this year. Not only did he allow a career low in receptions and yards, he ended the year with 68 tackles, 1 safety, 8 for loss, 10 Interceptions, 12 Pass deflections, 2 Forced fumbles and 1 Fumble recovery. This was his heaviest year for awards nominations. He took home the coveted Jim Thorpe award for best Defensive Back, the Chuck Bednarik award, Maxwell award and was 1st team all-American and all-conference. He also finished 4th in Heisman voting becoming the last primary defensive player to receive first place votes since Charles Woodson won the Heisman in 1997.

His senior year did not quit go as well has his Junior campaign. Krause was sidelined for the first 6 games of the year with a torn labrum. Although he returned to be the shutdown corner we know, it just did not come with as much bang and flash as his junior year. In the 8 games played Krause amassed 30 Tackles, 2 for loss, 2 Interceptions and 9 Pass deflections.

DSFL career

The DSFL saw its biggest draft class in history in the 2036 DSFL Draft (S21). Krause coming off a subpar senior year at USC was passed up till the 13th round, when the Minnesota Grey Ducks took a chance on the former standout college cornerback with the 97th overall pick. And what a pick this turned out to be for the Grey Ducks and what a defense this turned out to be for two years for the GMs of the Ducks. Krause’s first season with the Ducks saw him thrown in as a starting Corner and what an adjustment he had to make. Getting up to speed and the talent that came with such a large draft. Krause finished the season with 37 Tackles and 7 Pass Deflections. After the NSFL draft Krause and all the defensive starters returned for another developmental season with the Ducks. And we saw the development. The ducks allowed the fewest points allowed for this DSFL season and Krause finished with 45 Tackles, 11 Pass Deflections, 4 interceptions, 1 Forced Fumble and 1 Fumble Recovery and a Pro Bowl Selection. In the Pro bowl game Krause finished with 4 tackles, 1 interception, 1 touchdown and 2 Pass Deflections.

S23 "The Awakening"

San Jose Cornerback Matt Krause saw lots of struggles this season for the Cats. His first season in the big leagues, As we have seen Krause is a spectacular Cornerback who can hang with almost any receiver put in front of him. But little did Krause know he would be asked to play Free Safety this year for the cats as it was a hole in the defense and with enough cornerbacks on the roster, Krause had no problem being a team player his rookie year and learning a new position. This did how ever see a drop in normal production for the young rookie cornerback. He started off strong with a Sack on the first or second play of the first game and proceeded to help stop the rush up the middle. Asking him after this first game how it felt out there at Free safety Krause replied, "It felt weird but good? It was nice to line up on the line, rush the QB from the edge and be a free roaming the secondary". Krause helped seal a win with a Forced Fumble and a Fumble Recovery in a following game. After these initial successes Krause saw a drastic fall in production. I spoke with him at season end about how he felt it went, " I felt I did my best learning a new role for the team, as much as I love my stats and shutting down WRs, I always will put the team first. But look out next year, it will be a bounce back year for me, be ready. He looks to bounce back this year back at Cornerback for the Cats and much improved off season. We will continue to update his career page as he progresses.

S24 "The Wild Ride to Redemption"

WOW, what a season for CB Matt Krause. As mentioned Krause is coming off of a slow start to his ISFL career, He's back in his home position of CB, specifically the Nickleback position. Krause started all 16 games plus 2 playoff starts at this position for San Jose. The Redemption tour started with a trip down to Austin Texas for a season opener against the Copperheads. Krause couldn't of started of much better than what he did, leading the team in tackles with 12 and 3 PD's, San Jose was able to secure a victory over the Copperheads 27-20. The following weeks 2-5 would see the SaberCats faceoff at home against Orange County In the Battle for California, and the visiting Hahalua. The Cats managed to grab a W over the in-state rival Orange County Otters by a score of 24-14, Krause was able to help the team to victory with a mere 3 tackles. Following week saw them face-off against a division favorite Hahalua. In a tight contest that left the Cats feeling like they let victory slip from their hands, with a 40-37 Loss. During this tight contest Krause was able to get another 3 Tackles. Slightly, discouraged after a dramatic week 1 performance, Krause was anxious to get on the road to Arizona and then New Orleans to finish week 5 and try to get back to the big performance. In week 4 the Cats loss another close one to the Outlaws 27-20. Krause did indeed bounce back with 9 tackles and 2 PD's. Back east a bit in New Orleans the Cats get one in the win column with a nailbitting 17-14 win. Krause continues his road to 100+ tackles with another 8 with 1 PD. After 5 weeks the Cats sit at 3-2 a theme throught out the season. Week 6-12 saw more of the same up and down games from the Cats. Heading from New Orleans to Philadelphia The Cats again get by with a narrow 20-17 win. Krause produces 12 tackles and 1 PD's. Last game of the 4 game road trip ends in Chicago with Krause facing off a against 3 old teammates in a Alumni battle. Unfortunately, the Cats don't show up on offense and loss the game 10-3, Krause still able to get in 7 Tackles. Back home the Cats get into another nailbitter and lose to the Sailfish 20-17, followed up by a BIG win over Baltimore 33-16. In these two games we saw Krause finish with a two game total of 14 Tackles and 2PDs. Off to Canada for a game against the Wraiths and then Back home against the Yeti and Copperheads sees the Cats finish week 16 at 7-5 getting 2 wins in that 3 game span. Krause had 22 Tackles and 1PD's The home stretch saw the Cats go 2-2 and with Wins against Arizona and New Orleans and Losses against the Otters and the Hahalua. San Jose finished on top of the ASFC and secured a first round bye. Krause finished the Regular Season with 122 Tackles/1TFL/1FF/12PD's. Divison championship game was against non-other than in-state rival the Orange County Otters to not only get to the Ultimus but to be crowned Champion of California. The Cats get a HUGE victory at home with a 17-3 win. Finally, The Ultimus, San Jose faces a tough threat to their Championship dreams in non other than Former Champs the Colorado Yeti. San Jose was a massive underdog all year and that didn't change for the Cats this time either. Both teams started slow with a 3-3 score going into the middle of the second quarter. It looks to be another nailbitter for the Cats, Until, Non-other than Krause himself picks of QB McDummy at the Cats 38 yard line and takes the Interception to the house for a 62 Yard Pick Six, the longest in Ultimus history and San Jose playoff history and their only defensive playoff TD. This was a turning point in the game as it gave the Cats a 10-3 lead and they never let it go. Finishing as S24 ULTIMUS CHAMPS! with a 17-12 win over the Yeti. Your UMVP(unoffical) Krause led the team with not only the pick six but 8 Tackles and 2PD's. Finishing with 130 Tackles and 14PD's. No better way to hit Free Agency than on a high note. Stay tuned for the FA annoucment and where S25 takes the ISFL CB.
