Marlo Smart (born May 1, 2010) is an American football linebacker who is currently unsigned by a professional team. He played college football for the University of Delaware (UD) and has declared his intent to enter the professional ranks next season.

Early years

Marlo Smart was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to Abel Smart, a Mississippi river cruise captain, and Janet Smart, an elementary school teacher. The youngest of three, Marlo showed a proclivity for the outdoors that was not shared by his older sisters and would wait weeks inbetween his father's long trips up the river for the opportunity to ride of his father's ship when there were no commercial passengers.

Everything would change for the Smart family when Marlo was nine years old. His father took one of his usual trips up the Mississippi river but did not return. After months of fruitless searching, authorities officially ceased their search for Abel Smart. Looking to start fresh, Janet moved her children and herself to Philadelphia, Pennsylvannia where she had many family members.

By the time he reached his teen years, Marlo spent every summer with his father's family in Louisiana. He would take whatever menial jobs he could find on the river, hoping to one day discover his father. Marlo would eventually visit and work in every state along the Mississippi to no avail.

Marlo found his greatest source of stress relief came from football and would eagerly look forward to each new season. His strenuous summer jobs made him incredibly strong and that translated to results on the field. During his senior year of high school, Marlo would set the Furness High School record for sacks with 20.5.

College career

Despite being recruited by several more prominent programs, Marlo chose to attend his mother’s alma matter, the University of Delaware. As a freshman with the Blue Hens, Marlo did not start but still managed to record some impressive statistics including 16 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 tackles for loss, and a forced fumble. Many members of the local Delaware media projected a rise to stardom.

Marlo’s sophomore year would be over before it began after suffering an injury in the late summer while on a rock climbing trip with some friends. When it was discovered that his injury was the result of him being intoxicated at the time, Marlo faced a great deal of criticism and backlash from his team and the local media. He considered dropping out of college altogether but was convinced to stay by his older sisters and mother.

Marlo dedicated himself to his recovery and improving his game. The result was an excellent junior season that included 13.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss. By the end of his senior year, in which he recorded 12 sacks and 21 tackles for loss, he was considered by many to be one of the best linebacker prospects in the country.
