Mako Clive Mendonca (born January 10, 1997) is an American football runningback for the Austin Copperheads of the National Simulation Football League (). He played college football for Rice University (Rice) before being drafted by the Austin Copperheads in the 2031 ISFL Draft (S16). Mako is an Ultimini winner with the former DSFL club the Palm Beach Solar Bears. Mako is currently the lead back for the Austin Copperheads and already holds a number of records for this expansion team.

Early years

"Mako Mendonca was born in Woolwich in southeast London. He was the only child of Bill and Betty Mendonca, his father Bill was an oil rig worker while his mother Betty was a librarian.

Throughout his time at high school Mako played a number of sports to a high level, these included soccer, cricket and rugby union. Sports run in the Mendonca family, his great uncle is former West Indian wicket-keeper Ivor Mendonca and his uncle is former professional soccer player Clive Mendonca. Mako's father was often away and so he was very close to his uncle Clive, who was a cult hero in Woolwich following his hat trick heroics in local Soccer team Charlton Athletic's 1998 Division One play-off final."

College career

Mako originally went to college at the London based University of Greenwich where he studied sports science. In his second year Mako took part in a year long exchange programme with Rice University in Houston Texas, this is where Mako's footballing odyssey began.

One fateful day a month into his studying at Rice University Mako decided to accompany a couple of friends to support them during their walk-on tryouts for Rice's football squad. At the last minute he decided to try out as well, Mako's raw talent, his mixture of explosive speed, sure hand and agility quickly impressed the offensive coordinator and he was selected for the squad. The rest of the year he did not feature greeting in the team except as a kick and punt returner, however in this time Mako was developing his football skills. Over the following two years Mako set a series of Rice University records with 1,500+ rushing yards, 800+ receiving yards and over 30 touchdowns.

Professional career

DSFL career

Mako declared for the season 15 DSFL draft and had been training through the summer to bring himself to peak fitness, however this was when disaster struck. During a rest day he went to Disneyland with a number of former teammates to unwind, but on splash mountain he made the mistake of going at the back of a boat while 3 offensive linemen squeezed themselves into the front. On the largest drop the sheer weight in the front of the boat led to Mako being catapulted out of the boat and Mako ended up fracturing shoulder and breaking his collarbone. Mako therefore missed the DSFL draft as he focused on recovery.

Mako recovered enough to join the DSFL half way through season 15 where he was picked up by the Palm Beach Solar Bears. His first game was in week 7 against the Norfolk Seawolves and he slowly increased his play time throughout the regular season behind Ludicolo Bigby. Mako performances slowly increased through the season but it was in the postseason where he really shone scoring 2 touchdowns in each postseason game, gaining the playoff MVP and helping the Solar Bear's to their first Ultimini trophy.

Mako went into the NSFL season 16 draft, his draft stock was some what lower than others that year because of his late entry to the DSFL, however his strong finish led him to have a number of suitors. Mako was eventually taken as the eighth overall pick by the new expansion team the Austin Copperheads, which they had trade for with the Orange County Otters.

Mako went into season 16 with the Austin Copperheads as the second choice runningback behind Dick Wizardry. This was the Austin Copperheads first ever season and as they had such a young team it did not go well, with them losing all 13 games that year. With sitting behind Mako opening season stats where nothing to write home about with 555 total yards and 3 touchdowns. While this season was not the best for either Austin or Mako it was a great learning experience watching the class act that was Dick in his first and only season at Austin as a Runningback.

Season 17 was an up season for both Mako and for the Austin Copperheads. Dick Wizardry moved to defensive tackle after an all-you-can-eat chicken wing contest went wrong and Mako moved up to lead running back splitting the carries with Austins new 1st overall draft pick Ashley Owens. Austin went on to improve there record and finish with five wins and 8 loses. Mako finished the year with 1458 total yards and 9 total touchdowns which was a vast improvement on the previous year. Austin now had a 1-2 runningback punch, and the fact that both runningbacks were also great catchers of the ball made it even better.

Austin saw a further uplift in Season 18 and their first appearance in the post season. Mako and Ashley Owens continued their 1-2 punch and kept on rolling, with Austin winning 6 and losing 7 games which was enough to see them finish 3rd in the ASFC. While Mako's total yards dropped to 1142 his touchdowns rocketed to 11 with 7 coming from receiving opportunities. Austin lost out in the 1st round of the playoffs in a really close game with Arizona Outlaws 26-33.

Season 19 saw a great betray in Austin with Ashley Owens leaving the team (despite promising to sign a contract) making Mako the only Runningback in Austin. After realizing that would have to carry all the load for his beloved Austin Copperheads Mako worked on his speed to become one of the fastest runningback in the NSFL. Austin themselves struggled themselves in the season, having been unable to replace Owens in their offense, but despite a losing record of 5 wins and 8 loses they still were able to seek into the playoffs at 3rd place in the ASFC again. The season was great for Mako, with him breaking a number of Austin records previously belonging to his mentor Dick Wizardry. In total he had 1513 total yards and 12 touchdowns. Austin again failed in the playoffs this time losing to the New Orleans Second Line 17 points to 28. There was a silver lining on this lose however, with Mako taking the offensive player of the game award. Mako was selected for his pro bowl at the end of the season for the first time so that was certainly a silver lining.

Season 20 was a vast improvement for the Austin Copperheads. While the doubters were still around the player in Austin knew this was going to be a special season. Mako was once again the lead (and only) runningback for Austin who really sped up the speed at which there offense played. This new fast offense combined with a rock solid defense saw Austin have a very successful season. They finished top of the ASFC after going 8 and 5 with the least amount of points allowed and third most points scored and locking up the number two seed. They then faced New Orleans in the ASFC playoff. Mako had a cracking play off game scoring all Austin's touchdowns (two rushing 1 receiving) and was awarded offensive player of the match in the 26 - 17 win. Austin were in their first ever Ultimus match facing 3 time losers Yellowknife Wraiths. Despite going into the match as the underdogs and the visitors Austin dominated the Ultimus with their quarterback Easton Cole leading the way to a 37 - 20 victory and Ultimus champions. At the end of the season Mako was once again voted into the pro bowl, but this time as a Ultimus champion.
