Lionel Rumper (born July 31, 2017) is an American football safety who is currently preparing to enter the professional ranks. He played college football for Wake Forest Demon Deacons (WF) and was drafted by the Dallas Birddogs in the third round after a trade to move up with the Portland Pythons.

Early years

Born on 31st of July in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Cathy and Derrick "Ricky" Rumper, Lionel quickly rose to prominence in Indiana high school football circles. Lionel possesses athletic pedigree with is father Ricky Rumper, a Hoosiers legend who played linebacker, until a devastating knee injury in his final season cut any further prospects short. His mother Cathy also ran track at field at Indiana, which is where the pair met. Lionel himself was a a punishing runner throughout high school and a devastating hitter at safety, with several clips of his going viral across the nation. He ultimately spent his final year at high school focussing on defence, playing linebacker, nickel and safety, with the aim of earning a scholarship to play college football. Unfortunately he couldn't follow in his father's footsteps at Indiana, but he was offered a full scholarship to Wake Forest, and after a short journey to the south east. Lionel began his collegiate playing career.

College career

Rumper played three years at Wafe Forest University. As a Freshman, he was named a First Team Freshman All-American by Collegefootballnews.com, a second team by The Sporting News and was selected to the ACC-Freshman team by The Sporting News in 2036. He compiled 56 tackles (32 solo), one forced fumble, one pass break-up and one fumble recovery. In 2037, he was named as a second team All-ACC by coaches and honorable mention by the media. He led the team with 96 tackles (58 solo, 5 for loss), 2 forced fumbles, 1 sack, five pass break-ups and one interception He also blocked one punt. Starting all 13 games of his final season at Wake Forest, Lionel Rumper truly was a demon in the run game for the Demon Deacons. Finishing up the season with 111 tackles (68 solo, 9 for loss, 1 sack), Rumper also managed seven forced fumbles in his final season, leading Wake Forest in fumbles forced. He managed just one interception and six pass break-ups. He was again named second team All-ACC.

Professional career

Rumper was drafted to the Dallas Birddogs with the 17th overall pick, after a trade with the Portland Pythons, who received the 22nd and 70th overall picks. After expressing his excitement at being reunited in Dallas with fellow Horsemen Sheed Thebaw and Raylan Crowder, Rumper proceede to have a solid rookie season. After a relatively slow start, adjusting to the change to playing free safety, and constantly working to improving his athleticism, Rumper ended the season with a respectable two interceptions (double what he tallied in all of college), alongside a more familiar two sacks and a safety. Rumper was honoured with defensive game balls three times by the Dallas coaching staff, after finding his feet in the DSFL, and adjusting to the quicker speed of play that he was familar with in college, coming up with some big momentum shifting plays. After his DSFL debut season, a slimmed down Rumper had a rock solid combine, showing off a blazing 4.28s forty yard dash, alongisde a respectable 25 bench reps and score of 30 on the wonderlic. Rumper was drafted with the tenth pick in the third round of the ISFL draft by the Honolulu Hahalua (alongside fellow Horseman Rusty Rucker). Given their already strong defensive backfield, Rumper will be playing a second season in the DSFL with the Dallas Birddogs to ensure he's fully ready and adjusted to the professional game before he steps up to the ISFL, where he'll be looking to make a splash on arrival. Until then Rumper will be looking to step to the forefront of the Dallas defence, using his experience to hopefully make a name for himself before he joins fellow Dallas alum Guy Fields and Rusty Rucker at the Honolulu Hahalua.
