When Yates moved up to high school he discovered that the team already had a star quarterback. Yates then decided to switch positions and become a defensive tackle, he was able to quickly adjust to the position and became the star of his school's defense. He broke the high school sack record in Montana during his senior year. After four years of playing defensive tackle, he got a full ride athletic scholarship to Montana State University where Yates decided to enroll. Although he got offers from some power five schools, Yates chose to go to Montana State University because of how close it was to his home.
