Errol Maddox (born January 13, 2005) is an American football wide receiver for the Portland Pythons of the Developmental Simulation Football League (DSFL). He played college football for University of Maryland (UMD) and has declared his intent to enter the professional ranks next season.

Early years

Errol Maddox was born in Baltimore, Maryland as the son of Hector and Josephine Maddox. His father played cornerback at Virginia Tech for four years in college, though he did not pursue a professional career in football as he instead pursued a career in law. His mother was a track star in college and participated in the 2000 Olympics before settling down to work as an English teacher. Maddox was a natural athlete as he inherited strong genes from both of his parents. His parents pushed him to pursue interests off the field as well, but as a natural competitor, Maddox found that his passion lied in playing sports. Growing up, he played football, basketball, and baseball, but ultimately decided to focus on football when he started high school so that he could channel all of his energy into one sport.

Maddox attended high school at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Olney, Maryland. His natural athleticism allowed him to shine early on and he was able to start on the varsity team as a freshman. The coaches took advantage of his versatility and played him at several different positions as he saw time at running back, wide receiver, and cornerback during his high school career. During his senior season, he was selected as Maryland's Gatorade Football Player of the Year as he put together a strong showing and helped lead the Falcons to a conference championship. He was highly regarded by college scouts after his strong performance in high school. Most scouts believed his best fit at the next level would be as a wide receiver and recruited him to play wide receiver. He received offers from several top football schools, but he announced that he wanted to stay local and decided to play his college career at the University of Maryland.

College career

Errol Maddox was able to step in right away as a starter during his freshman year at the University of Maryland. He showed off some of his playmaking ability during his freshman year, but never really found his rhythm as injuries forced Maryland to cycle through a few different quarterbacks that season and prevented the passing game from finding much consistency. Maddox still put together a decent season with 612 receiving yards and 5 receiving touchdowns as a freshman. He made a big leap in his second season as a stable quarterback situation allowed him to take off and explode. Maddox led the Big 10 in receiving yards that season with 1313 receiving yards along with 12 receiving touchdowns. He also took on a returner role that season and recorded 546 kick return yards as well as 1 kick return touchdown.

After a strong showing as a sophomore, Maddox looked to be poised for a big junior year. Unfortunately, he never got the chance to get started as he tore his ACL during offseason training activities and missed the entire season. At this point, he faced some uncertainty about his future. Some questioned if he would ever be able to recover and return to his previous form. He focused more on his schoolwork that year as he had to consider the possibility that he would not be able to pursue a career in football. However, he was presented with a new opportunity. While he recovered too late to play in college that season, there were still a few weeks left in the DSFL season and he was offered the chance to join a team on waivers that season and then enter the next DSFL draft. He realized he would have the chance to complete his rehab with a professional training staff and would get the chance to show scouts that he had recovered by getting some real playing time in the DSFL. Additionally, the security of a guaranteed DSFL contract would provide a fallback in case he got injured again. Ultimately, he decided to forgo his final year of college eligibility in order to enter the DSFL following what would have been his junior year.
