Clay Clark (born March 9, 2016) is an American football cornerback who is currently preparing to enter the professional ranks. He played college football for Florida State University (Florida State) and has declared his intent to enter the professional ranks next season.

Early years

Clay Clark was born in Jacksonville, Florida, to father Clark Clark and mother Antonia Clark (née Antoinette). Clark Clark was the bassist for local band Italian Herbs & Cheese. Antonia was a groupie traveling around Jacksonville with the band, but quickly entered a committed relationship with Clark after seeing how well his fingers moved about on a bass, and hearing his rendition of Tommy the Cat only wooed her more. Clay was born roughly a year after this encounter. After an uneventful time as a student up to high school, Clay had a sudden desire to join the football team, and became an immediate starter, albeit on Forrest High's fairly shoddy roster. Nonetheless, he impressed coaches and was offered a spot on the varsity team. He did not waste this opportunity in the slightest, bringing in 19 interceptions over the course of his high school career, and tacking on 121 tackles for good measure. He was also used as a receiver on occasions, although sparingly, but nonetheless brought in an addition 34 receptions in his high school career, for about 300 yards and 2 touchdowns. He left high school as a three-star recruit, with big, flashy numbers, but questions about if he played against suitable competition to prepare for college, and further questions about if he was fast enough to cover some of the speedsters from around the country, and even further concerns about his perceived low endurance and tendency to slow down as the game progressed.

College career

Clark had verbally committed to Florida State University as early as his sophomore year in high school, regardless of recruiting interest, and kept true to this commitment. Clark was redshirted his freshman year, and given a little time to age like a fine wine. In his redshirt freshman season, Clark recorded 40 tackles, 32 solo, and 1 interception which he returned for a touchdown. The Seminoles would finish 6-7 that season, barely making a bowl game, and subsequently losing the Cheez-It Bowl to the Akron Zips. Questions about Clark's speed were once again raised, but coach Norvell was confident enough in his abilities to keep him as a starter. This proved to be a wise decision, as Clark upped his game as a redshirt sophomore, recording 55 tackles, 44 solo, and added 3 interceptions, one of which was a pick-six. As a redshirt junior, Clark would assist the Seminoles in putting together one of their finest seasons in recent memory, going undefeated in the regular season, and making the College Football Playoffs. Clark assisted greatly in this effort with one of the best seasons a cornerback has had in recent years, recording 71 solo tackles, and adding 9 interceptions to help the 'Noles along to that undefeated mark. However, in Florida State's first game of the Playoffs, against rival Miami, the team collapsed, with the offense giving up an astonishing 15 turnovers, 7 of which were interceptions, successfully turning the ball over on every single possession they had. The defense, perhaps demoralized by the offense's complete ineptitude, gave up the highest point total in over 100 years- the Florida State Seminoles, an undefeated team, gave up 147 points to the Hurricanes, a total of 21 touchdowns, 10 of which were rushing touchdowns, another 7 of which were passing, 3 fumble returns, and a pick-six. Clark alone allowed over 250 yards in this game, and 4 touchdowns. Clark returned to Florida State for his final season of eligibility, hoping to redeem himself for last season's failures. In this effort, he finished the season with 67 tackles, 59 solo, and 4 interceptions. The Seminoles finished the season 11-2, winning their bowl game against Kentucky. Clark declared for the draft a few days after this game.
