Asher "The Monster" Montain (born October 11, 2015) is an American football defensive end who is currently a defensive end with the Honolulu Hahalua, selected Third Overall in the 2039 ISFL Draft. He played college football for University of Alabama (Alabama) and has declared his intent to enter the professional ranks next season.

Early years

Asher Montain was born in Long Beach, California on November 11, 2015. Born into the upper middle class, Asher and his older brother, Tyler, were raised by their father, Elliot Montain, a doctor in the sports medicine-field, and their mother, Margot Montain, Chief Financial Officer for a venture capital firm. With no other immediate family to speak of, the Montain family was very close, and the brothers were nearly inseparable. Despite the family's sophisticated lifestyle, Asher and Tyler both were encouraged to start playing sports. Their parents strongly believed in the importance of work ethic, teamwork, and ambition, and they believed that sports nurtured those values perfectly. Given that both boys were physically large, they naturally gravitated to football. So, they joined the well-regarded Los Alamitos High School football team. Tyler played defensive tackle, and Asher played defensive end. So, not only did they train together, they literally played next to each other. They were What the Montain brothers lacked in family numbers, they made up for in friends. Asher and Tyler didn't have an entourage, but they never seemed to have trouble getting along with everyone. Both earned good grades, though they were never perfect students, and both excelled in athletics.

College career

Suspecting that his talents could make a professional career possible given the right team and coaching, Asher's college selection process was rigorous. At the end, although Asher was scouted by schools across the country from multiple conferences, Asher couldn't deny Alabama's history of producing high-caliber defensive ends -- so, he joined the Crimson Tide. It placed the family in a unique situation to have both children playing Division I football in the same conference and playing each other once every year. Asher maintains to this day that Tyler's college selection wasn't a consideration in his selection, just a "fortunate coincidence." The downside to his selection was that he did not win a starting position in training camp due to the depth of talent. However, in the second game of the season, opportunity knocked when injuries earned him significant playing time. His performance in the game earned him a starting position for the rest of his college career. While his team was never able to overcome the LSU powerhouse during his brother's time on the opposing sideline, he was able to finally earn a win against them his senior year. Despite the losses, he did successfully become the stat leader in several categories, his favorite being 66 tackles for loss. Despite his success and continued attention from professional scouts, Asher refused to declare for the draft early, "I came here to play football, but I also came here for an education. So, I am going to graduate before I move on the next phase of my life. Also, I made a commitment to the coaches and players of Alabama, and I intend to honor that commitment. Roll Tide!" Asher graduated in 2037 with a bachelor's degree in business administration.

Professional Career

DSFL Career

Asher declared himself a Prospect for the DSFL Draft during S22, and is suspected to garner enough attention to warrant being claimed off waivers for some pre-draft experience.

London Royals

Asher was claimed off waivers in Season 22 by the London Royals. The Royals, a recent expansion team in the DSFL, had been ranked last in the pre-season power rankings, but powered out of the gate winning three straight and excited to be proving the analysts wrong. However, at the time Asher arrived at the training facilities and started his first game, the Royals' luck had slipped, and they were on a five game losing streak. Asher was immediately slotted into the starting lineup at defensive end, and the team's luck pivoted immediately. They snapped their streak and earned a playoff berth. The excitement only continued from there when London upset the Minnesota Grey Ducks for the Conference Championship and a spot in the Ultimini! Asher was thrilled. They went on to the Ultimini as the away team and, unfortunately, fell to the Tijuana Luchadores. Whether it was nerves, pressure, or just a better team, Asher's performance in the playoffs plummeted, and he could not help but feel partially responsible. Nevertheless, he developed a close bond with his London teammates having been part of the team that took London to its first Ultimini appearance -- something he will always hold close to his heart.

Kansas City Coyotes

After a relatively uneventful offseason, Montain was thrown into the spotlight after being taken first overall in the DSFL Draft in Season 23 by the Kansas City Coyotes. As if deju vu couldn't be any clearer, Kansas City had a poor showing the previous season. They were last place in the conference with a 5-9 record and the most points allowed in the entire league. Kansas City brought Asher in to help put a stop to their defensive struggles. Montain joined fellow veterans like Jon Bois, Carl Wheezer and, a new friend he made during the Combine, Brach Thomaslacher, who while still a rookie was a returning waiver player to Kansas City among other draftees. The team rebounded. Not only did Kansas City have the most dominant defense in the league allowing for the fewest points against, they lead the conference going into the playoffs with home field advantage! Against all odds, Montain and the Kansas City Coyotes beat back Montain's old team, the London Royals. Asher made a second consecutive appearance in the Ultimini. With his prior experience, Asher made a larger impact, and, although he -- again -- failed to bring home the trophy, he was much more satisfied with his performance. After all, not many players can say they helped take two separate teams to two Ultiminis in consecutive years.

ISFL Career

ISFL Draft

Following the post-season, Asher turned his full attention to the ISFL Combine. After going 1st Overall in the DSFL Draft, a poor showing at the Combine could greatly reduce his draft stock.

Asher dominated. Analysts praised his performance:

Oh lord... we have some absolute *monsters* over here. . . .Asher Montain, who I believe was the first overall pick in the DSFL draft last year could very well go first overall again in the ISFL draft this year, the kid is terrifying. He is roughly as fast as some of the best defensive backs in league history, not far off the strength of the strongest guys in league history, and just all around monstrous athletically. In most leagues, we'd be talking about him as a generational talent, but alas, this is the ISFL.

— ISFL Combine Analyst

Confident in his showing, he knew he had likely secured himself as a 1st Round talent. But, having 1st Round talent does not necessarily secure you a 1st Round selection. As the pre-draft predictions and analysis came in, it was almost a certainty that Montain would not repeat his number one pick DSFL performance. Most mock drafts had him going to the Philadelphia Liberty at 8th Overall, with some minority picks sending him off to the desert heat with the Arizona Outlaws. One article justified him potentially going 2nd, 4th, or 8th overall to Sane Jose, Honolulu, and Philadelphia. It seemed as though no one knew for sure where Asher would go, only predicting somewhere in the 1st round.

Asher was selected 4th Overall by the Honolulu Hahalua. After spending a season in London and Kansas City, Asher was more than excited to ship out to the Hawaiian Islands to start his career! Honolulu had gone 7-9 the prior season, but was chasing playoff potential as they geared up for a run. After losing some Front Office personnel and their franchise quarterback, Montain knew he wasn't being handed any success, so to speak. Montain was brought up from the DSFL immediately. He was the future of Honolulu's defensive front, and he was ready.

Season 24

Montain's rookie ISFL season was a year of growth and a year of learning. He clearly was in a new world of competition and was no longer the "stud" that he was in the DSFL. His statistics reflected that. He still managed to be within striking distance of other comparable defensive ends, so he wasn't totally disappointed in his performance. Honolulu's projections at the beginning of the season was not promising. After all, their veteran quarterback had just retired. Largely considered to be a team in a rebuilding phase (both offensively and defensively), Honolulu was surprisingly in the upper echelons of their conference in the beginning parts of their season. For some time, it was thought that they may develop a chance at a playoff spot, however, other teams sprung ahead in the back half of the season, and Honolulu fell. Although they finished the season in fifth place, they did so with an 8-8 record which was largely considered to be successful with a rookie quarterback and still a very young team with zero players in regression. Unfortunately, this also created potential problems given that season 24 was a year of league expansion and an expansion draft that created exposure for the young team that needed every veterans they could muster in order to continue to become competitive.

Montain finished the season by recording his first ever forced fumbles and fumble recoveries. When asked what his goal was for the upcoming season, he stated that he would like to break the 11 tackles-for-loss threshold that he has seemingly been limited to since the beginning of his career.
