Alberto McGwire (born July 4, 2006) is an American football defensive tackle who is currently unsigned by a professional team.

Early years

Alberto was born on the 4th of July in Saint Louis Missouri in 2006. Neither of his parents were particularly athletic or large in stature, so imagine their surprise when Alberto popped out weighing 10 pounds and 13 ounces. He was the largest baby born Saint Louis that year. His size would continue to baffle parents and physicians alike, Alberto entered his high school years topping out at 6 feet and 2 inches tall and 280 pounds. Due to Missouri athletic restrictions on not starting tackle football until high school, McGwire was solely interested in basketball due to his sheer size, strength, and ease of domination in the post. He obviously drew the attention of freshman football coaches at Christian Brothers College High School and was destined to attend before starting middle school. At CBC McGwire quickly learned the ins and outs of battling in the trenches and started as a two-way offensive and defensive lineman all 4 years. His high school coaches raved about his fleet footwork and technical hand skills, which, when combined with his amazing athleticism and sheer size, translated into All-State honors in his junior and senior years of high school.

College career

McGwire was recruited by colleges far and wide but landed on Northwestern University after a personal home visit by head coach Pat Fitzgerald all but sealed the deal. As a true freshman in 2017, McGwire saw limited playing time at the beginning of the season but impressed his position coaches enough to warrant an increase in snaps on passing downs. This lead to McGwire collecting an outstanding 12 sacks, setting the Big 10 record for sacks by a freshman. In his sophomore season he again did not crack the starting line up, but split time with another defensive lineman and was on the field for the majority of passing downs. He recorded 15 sacks, 25 tackles for loss, and caused and recovered 3 fumbles. He was voted to the All-Big 10 team and received 2nd team All-American honors. In his junior year he started every game for the Wildcats and had an even more successful season, recording 18 sacks, 26 tackles for loss, and 2 fumbles with 1 fumble recovery for a touchdown. The highlight of his season came in the Music City Bowl in Nashville playing against the University of Kentucky. With Northwestern holding onto a one point lead and Kentucky starting to march down the field with under a minute left and no timeouts, McGwire chased down quarterback Terry Wilson as he tried to throw the ball away. Alberto wrapped both of his arms up, preventing Wilson from making any throw whatsoever and time expired before Kentucky could kick a potentially game-winning field goal.
